Career change

Hey folks. This has been on my mind a lot lately. I work in the science/medical device sector and I have decided that this is no longer for me anymore. Not just this job or company but all science/medical devices/pharmaceutical companies. I am not going to go into the details as to why, I just need a serious change.

My question is has anyone (I am sure there is someone) done this before? As in a complete change, re-train as something else etc. Was it difficult? Was it the right decision?

My biggest problem is the wage. I am on an OK salary but it is no longer about the money. However, I am constantly concerned about paying a loan and mortgage if I decide to go back an re-train. There is also the concern that the sector I end up re-training in may not be the most financially viable.

    Thanks folks.

Plenty of the lads I trained with as an accountant had engineering/ science backgrounds.

They had been made redundant after 5+ years of work and had returned to do an accountancy traineeship in their late 20's.

Looking back now as someone who is 30, I cant imagine doing the same myself as the drop in salary for them must have been 50-60%.

But to a man (and it was all men) they are all doing well financially now. And they have mostly caught up on their career path.

Med device rolls and pharma jobs are incomparable IMO.
Most med device places are high volume production, it's all KPIs, scrap metrics, lean this lean that, line clearance, deviations everywhere, often ran by lads who'd be better off managing flat pack furniture factories.

Pharma plants (unless generic manufacturers) have less of the bullsh1t (the stuff I mentioned), it's still there but less in your face) and it's a far more enjoyable experience IMO.

I've done both and toggled between both.

Hey thanks for that. Ya it's the metrics, KPIs, lean BS that really has me driven demented. Least there is some bit of hope.

As I said I toggled between both. I was lucky in so far as I started in pharma and bio pharma and than moved to med devices so it was not overly hard to move back.

I worked with folk in med devices who in their own minds discounted ever moving to pharma roles so never bothered trying.

I reckon most people in med devices hate it tbh. Sweat shops.
