Club Pro Shop and Club Competitions

    Hi All

Just wanting to get a feel for how club competitions are ran across the country and how much of a cut (if any) the club pro is taking from the entry fees.

There is a comp on 3 times per week for men. The usual price is £3 for the comp and £1 for the 2s competition. Top 3 or 4 given a GUI voucher or money added onto their shop balance depending on the number of entries.

I'm in a new member so just figuring out how things work but from what I can see the pro is taking 33% of competition fee. e.g. last week, 30 entrants is £90 but only £60 is given out as vouchers.

All the £1s from the 2s throughout the week (3 comps) is totaled and spread between each golfer who attained a 2 (or multiple 2s) in the comps.

I'm yet to fully figure out if this 33% cut applies to the 2s comp as well. I had a 2 on sunday past. From my calculations using figures on HDID, i can see each £2 should be worth £6.64 (93 entrants/14 twos) but i'm yet to see this amount of money given out yet for a 2. usually £3 or £4.

Is a 33% cut on member's entry fees fair? Surely the club is making enough from shop sales, societies, buggy hire, range, etc.

Don't think anyone here can answer your questions. Why don't you ask your club where the money goes?

Regarding the twos, you're assuming everyone that played has entered the twos. At our place it's €2 to enter and it all goes back out to the winners.

Our club have a different way of working, the shop, bar and restaurant are all run by the same person, they get a payment to do administration for the club, bookings, green fees, membership etc. They take all money from the shop, food, coffee etc but the club take all money from alcohol.

They don't take anything from club comps but the 2s money does go into a members shop account and the money can only be spend in the shop.

During the summer months, all comps are sponsored so that covers the prizes, from October to April, all comps have a set prize amount regardless of amount playing, as long as it's over 12 (I think).

Most clubs produce a statement at end of year where you can see where the money goes.

Yes you're right, i'm assuming everyone has entered 2s. Of course that may not be the case which could explain lower payouts.

As i said, i just wanted to get a feel for how other clubs handle their comps and whether any money is made from member's entry fees.

Of course they make some money from the competition fees. Competition fees at our place are €7 per competition. If for example, 100 people enter that's €700 in fees and they maybe pay out €200 in vouchers which costs the club less than that in real money.

I didn't see what the problem with the club making some much needed money. I'm perfectly fine with them making money wherever they can once it's fair and being spent correctly.

For clubs that do not have a pro or shop competition entries are the biggest source of income after annual fee's, our club gives our 40% of the competition revenue as prizes in run of the mill comps and a bit more for our majors, our 2's club is 3 euro a pop and comp entry is7 euro. One of the things that i think we could be doing with the 2's club is to categorize it as the higher handicap guys are in effect subsidizing the lower marked players. The roll overs in Cat 3 could mean some really juicy pots.

surprised the higher handicaps in your club enter the 2s at all. We have 2 categories for our 2s (<=14 & >14) but there is still complaints and they wanted there to be 3 categories (<9, 10-18, >19)

Our 2s comp is not categorized either. We have three players playing of 1, 2 and 4 who clean up. Guy of 1 had four 2s in 3 rounds last week.

I'm sure Senna isn't far off the mark saying some of the high category players don't enter which would explain the lower payouts mentioned in my opening post.

It's only €2 and won't leave the kids hungry :).

Still has to be done fairly and if I was a 20 hcp paying €2 for every comp but only winning €7+/- for a 2 (which I get 1 in 10 rounds?) I wouldn't be bothered to click the 2s button.
I'd say plenty of other people would be doing the same. It's in the interest of the club to have as many players joining everything they run, so there has to be some allowances made.

Yep i would say 80% of all competitors enter the 2's regardless of category, you could look it another way though if it was categorized would the lower guys stop going into it as the pots would be a lot lower.
