Surely these new proposals are unconstitutional? One rule for one religion and a different rule for other religions differentiating only on religion.

The whole area of school admission policy has been debated to death, my post is just about this aspect of the new proposals.

    How so?

If you can read this, you're too close!

Smaller groups need more protection in order to preserve their ethos I suppose.

Baptism only becomes criteria when it comes to over-subscription. Removing it won't create extra places.

As with everyone though, they should teach religion outside school.
I disagree with teaching religion during school time, but this proposal is discriminatory and unfair.

I think this is a cop out from Bruton, if he was to truly look after the smaller groups he would make sure all relgions had some level of ethos in our school system.

This should have been removed from all schools, if we are arguing equality for tax payer how exactly is it fair that we keep certain safe schools for some.

Very interesting debate on newstalk about this earlier, the educate together framework of ethics driven teaching seems to be the best approach to this. Let parents then drive the other bits outside of school.

Funny thing in the debate was, the Educate together, Iona institute, and Atheist Ireland representatives all agreed this is a stroke by Bruton to distract from the undersupply of schools.

Had to give a soundbite before summer holidays, I guess.

Great way to integrate minority population by allowing them to self segregate.
