after consulting with my gp about hrt for ftm, he told me that he would refer me to loughlinstown at around a one year wait for an appointment.. he also mentioned that the other option would be to go to do hrt privately in galway

im without a medical card and am a student dependent on my parents, but am covering the cost of this transition myself. would anyone have an idea of how much it costs to go to loughlinstown without a medical card, and possibly how much it would cost to pursue hrt at in galway (i assume galway clinic since its a private hospital, but i could be wrong)

any help would be appreciated, thanks xx

TENI might have professional info on it

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

"Dr Marcia Bell in the Galway Clinic costs about E150 for first appointment, about 110 for subsequent, there's a similar doctor in Barringtons private Hospital in Limerick. Not sure if Loughlinstown do private appointments. Drugs payment scheme will limit cost of prescriptions to E150 per month (for non medical card holders)."

    Hi.

Yes, you can see Dr Bell privately, but she also works out of the Galway University Hospital for the HSE - you could ask to be referred there. Going private is ridiculously expensive - faster, but unless you're loaded, not worth it. Forget private; go HSE.

Also, I was informed at my last appointment, a specialised Gender Clinic is about to be opened in Galway University Hospital, again under Dr Bell. Up till now they have been treating us in the Endocrinology Unit.

I can't really comment on the new clinic yet, as I haven't had an appointment there - but I am getting anxious that they seem to have forgotten about sending out notice for my next appointment as they go through this transitional period (if you forgive the terrible pun).

    Best of luck.

And if you have anymore questions, I'll be happy to ramble on some more:)

There is no charge in Loughlinstown, you'll be treated as a public patient. At least that was my experience.

Feel free to pm me and I'll break down my process as I mixed private care in terms of referrals and surgery

I know this was posted a few months ago but I'm just after "coming-out" to my GP, I asked about being referred to a psychologist but she gave me a leaflet for 'counselling in primary care' and is gonna ring me in a few days to see if I wanna do it (I don't it's not what I was looking for) so if I get referred to a psychologist can my psychologist then refer me on to Dr Bell in Galway for HRT instead of having to go to Loughlinstown?? I didn't even know about her there's not a lot of information about this on the internet...

Primary care is usually a good starting place, and these things do take time. In my own situation it was community mental health team who took the referral from my GP. I had a meeting with a registrar who did preliminary, a second consultation with a consultant psychiatrist, and a referral to Loughlinstown (pending). Loughlinstown is suitable for me though as I was born there and live not too far from there.

Have the information available that you want to go to Dr. Bell in Galway and ask the psychiatrist to refer you there if possible. Be prepared to jump through hoops though. None of these things are straight forward, but you'll get there.

    Best of luck!

How long roughly did it take for you to see a psychologist once you were referred so I've a rough idea for myself?

2 weeks for first appointment. Second was a further 2 months.
