interesting enough article here on the pencil grip, its history and it's - potential - effectiveness.

Paul Trevillion: Roy of the Rovers cartoonist with the secret to putting

I wouldn't be rushing out to change anything - I have a fairly conventional putting grip and stroke, but it is interesting to read about alternatives.

The biggest thing I did recently to improve my putting was to take a lesson! My first ever putting lesson - every other golf lesson I had up until that focused on my swing, but I'd never taken one on putting. It was a very interesting 30 minutes.

I started using it after noticing how many pros did. I was an awful putter and it has made a big difference. I'm not going to win anything because of my putting but I break even.

Thanks for the link must look up that amateur

What the lesson focus on - line and pace or the putting stroke? Where did you do it?

We had a good chat about how to read the green/line but the "takeaway message" from that was that its more art than science and it's just something you need to practice.

The majority of the lesson was taken up with the actual mechanics of striking the ball and setting it off on your chosen line. So we started from the ground up - looking at posture, head position, arm/hand position and weight distribution. Then the mechanics of the stroke and the impact.

In summary, previously, I wasn't a bad putter but my weight was too far on my heels and not enough towards the hole (I needed to kind of lean forward and to my left), my hands were behind the ball (they should been slightly forward) and I was too quick to look and follow the ball when I struck it......

I'd say now (after the lesson and a lot of practice applying it) I'm much more consistent - if I miss now it's nearly always because I haven't read the putt properly (or I've been undone by a bobble), not because I've pulled or pushed it......and occasionally I'll 'choke' and hit one short!

Lesson was from the club pro.

Has anybody gone for a putter fitting? If so how did it turn out?

Practiced this last night and felt great. I took a lesson last month and it really improved my putting but I can still get very tight (yippy) over the shorter ones. This gave the stroke a lot more freedom. Will try it out for a few weeks and see how it goes.
