Polo 1.2 TSi Bluemotion

I was in Tenerife a few weeks ago and hired a car for the week. It was a near new Polo 1.2 TSi Bluemotion with less than 1500km on it. First thing I noticed was the drone of the engine which led me to believe it was a 1.0 3 cylinder motor. Then once I started driving I was totally surprised at how nippy it was and so asked the wife to look at the handbook to see what engine it was as I was convinced it had to have a turbo. She told me it said 1.2 in the book so I was thinking 1.2 turbo. I got out onto the motorway and I was actually blown away at the pick up, it would accelerate in top gear (5th) on inclines at 120kmph. I pulled the bonnet when we arrived at our accommodation but couldn't see any sign of a turbo and it looked like a 4cyl engine.

We done quite a few miles in the mountains and there is virtually no pull in low revs to the point of where you nearly have to go into 1st gear on some of the slower and steeper inclines while in the mountains/hills but once the revs rose and you got going pick up was great and it was like a turbo had spooled up.

The fuel computer indicated the average MPG for the week was 44mpg and it only cost me €26 to brim it before returning it at the end of the holiday.

So what makes the pick up in these bluemotion engines so good if theres no turbo? And how come the 4cylinder sounds like a 3cylinder engine, does a cylinder cut out to conserve fuel in certain conditions?

TSI is turbo. The turbo 1.2 is 4 cylinder. Rented one too in the canaries. Clutch was hanging out of it by the time I handed it back.

Ah right that explains it so, they are seriously impressive little car for only 90bhp.

I couldn't do with one full time as I had a blister on my right knee from constantly rubbing off the centre section but other than that I couldn't fault the car. It could have done with a 6th gear for motorway speeds though.
