What to wear to a technical skills test?

My son has applied for an mechanical apprenticeship and has been called to a skills test. What should he wear to this test which he has been told is likely to last between 2 to 4 hours? Because it is for a mechanical apprenticeship, his dad thinks jeans and a shirt would be enough but I feel that smart trousers and a shirt…

I think something comfortable. He'll be basically doing exams in a group setting so he'll want to feel comfy
