Tempered Glass in Bathroom

A relation of mine has fallen in a bathroom and received twelve stitches as they put their hand out to save themselves and their hand went through the inside pane of glass in a double glazed unit of a bathroom window. The glass was not tempered and they are lucky they were not killed. There are large shards of glass exposed.

I checked the regulations and it said any glass below 800mm is required to be tempered. The glass in the window is 900mm from floor level. Is there a regulation which gives a minimium distance from the shower to the window which requires tempered glass to be used, as I cannot find one in our regulations. The bathroom is very small and the distance from shower to window is 700mm.

Is there a regulation that requires tempered glass to be used in bathroom windows regardless of measurements?

if there is no regulation there should be, according to this accident and the near miss they had.

Any information or point me in the right direction to current regs would be appreciated, thank you.

You can't design for freak accidents unfortunately.

the reason for the 800mm limit for toughened glazing is to cover the majority of cases where falling into glazing occurs, especially for children. every single case cannot be legislated for unfortunately.
