I'm in the market for a diesel, no bigger than 1.6 ideally around 2010.

Seeing Peugeot 407s and Meganes in my price range.

    Any thoughts or advice?

Why the limitation on 1.6, from 2008 most diesels had cheap motor tax irrespective of the engine size.

Peugeot 407 was old and tired by 2010 and the 1.6 HDi engine would not have the best track record for reliability. A Renault Megane is smaller than a 407 but the Mk3 Megane has proved to be a reliable car. The Fluence would be the saloon version of the Megane and worth looking at too. 5k budget you will be looking at fairly high mileage examples of all these cars.

1.6 hdi would be ok same engine used in the mazda 3 volvo s40 and ford focus.

I would look at a d4d corolla. 1.4 are a nice little car.

I know as I had a S40 and Focus with that engine. The Focus was reliable whereas the S40 wasn't particularly. They are very unforgiving around neglect and lack of servicing. The Megane or Fluence would be less risky. Corolla is a good shout but OP will have to drop back a few years older to get a good one for 5k.

I'm not driving that long so any insurance quotes I've gotten for cars over 1.6d have been too pricey.
