Falsely Accused

Hi, a friend of mine has been accused of cheating on his wife by a third party.

My friend fervently denies this, and the person making the accusations has absolutely no proof.

My own feeling on this matter is that he's completely innocent, and the person making these accusations, is doing so in extremely bad faith and trying to make as much trouble for my friend as they possibly can.

Needless to say, this has caused a huge amount of upheaval for my friend and his wife, irrespective of the veracity of the allegations against him.

Does my friend have any legal recourse to at least counter these allegations, let alone hold the person making them, accountable?

He could sue them for defamation but I would rather find out why they want to cause trouble for your friend? Maybe a trip to the solicitor and a cease and desist letter might sort them out but again it might make things worse.
