Is there any current towns that could one day become cities, the most obvious would be quite large towns such as Dundalk and Drogheda, or midlands towns such as Athlone, Portlaoise and Tullamore, then you have western towns such as Sligo, Ennis and Tralee, which are all decent sized towns, I know places such as Tallaght and Swords have been suggested but they are really just suburbs of Dublin, and hence not likely to become cities, what to you think, will any of those towns or others be upgraded to city status.

Sligo already thinks of it self as a city, with its city core road signs. Although ask most of us from there, and we are still yet to find it.

A city should have an international airport imo

    So that narrows it down.

Tralee was actually looking for city status there recently. I don't how this went down nationally now.

Isn't Kilkenny referred to as a city or has it lost that status I'm not certain.

The midlands could do with a proper city, somewhere like Athlone, Roscommon, or Tullamore.

    Hah.

Not a hope, doesn't even have a decent 3rd level institution.

Would say Athlone has the best chance to become a city in the midlands, if Kilkenny isn't one that's another.

Which are the recognized cities in Ireland? Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, is Waterford one?

Kilgarvan in Kerry. Crying out for city status. No cities in Kerry, so it'd be a first.
