Golfing in Galway....

....with a few guys in August and was looking for some advice on which course to choose.

It's a 4 ball and 2 of us will be GUI golfers and the other 2 would be social guys only really. Two guys in singles the others off 20+

Looking for a mid-range cost course but would pay up to ?70/?80 for a green fee.

Here's the list I've made for now. Can anyone advise or add more?

Personally I'm feeling Connemara at the moment.

    Connemara GC
    Galway Bay
    Oughterard GC
    Bearna GC
    Galway GC
    Tuam GC
    Glenlo Abbey
    Athenry
    Cregmore

    Much obliged.

Galway Bay is a must. Have an open day on Fridays I think. €45 with lunch, bargain!!! Tough track, never broke 30 pts but always enjoyable and windy :)

Cregmore is wide and open and a friendly club, suit your 20+ lads.

Athenry has a lot of trees, so can be frustrating if you play army golf!!

    Galway GC is just class

Glenlo is a 9 hole, haven't play it since all the works have been done but looks really well.

Bearna/Tuam haven't been to in years but in August bring the bug spray to keep the midges away in Bearna.

Have never been to Connemara GC but only hear good things

Galway Bay the best track of the lot. If its windy though it will break you, especially those off 20+ bring plenty of balls. Also check the 45euro deal and if it applies to non GUI. The rack rate for Galway Bay is now 110euro!!! which is ridiculous

Athenry and Galway GC always in great condition. Galway is a pretty long course and Athenry is tighter but you dont lose balls so handy enough for all levels. Both decent places for a spot of grub after as well

Connemara is a lovely links course a really playable course for all levels as is fairly wide open in a good way, but its a long trek on from Galway city so take that into account.

I personally would only be looking at those 4

Have only played Galway bay from that list and another thumbs up for it, fantastic course.

Connemara GC 1 hour and 15 from city. very good 27 holes
Galway Bay home club. can be expensive as others have said but ring for deals.
Oughterard GC 30 mins from city. nice track
Bearna GC cheap but you get what you pay for
Galway GC closest to city. can be difficult to get out on.
    Tuam GC. not my pick
Glenlo Abbey. ok for a quick 9.
Athenry. meh 4 or 5 good holes
    Cregmore. nah.

    Thanks for the replies.

Galway Bay looking good and the links is still in there. I might drop them both a mail and see what they can do for a Saturday in August...

If you are doing a few days in the west it might be worth while doing a mini tour Galway GC, Oughterard & then Connemara....you can always come back by Westport & Ballinrobe :)
Dont rule out Portumna if you are out that direction...lovely track

I would highly recommend trying to get a round in at portumna. Fantastic course! And cheap enough too I think!

Galway Bay is my old club and like the other posters I'd put it top of your list. It's a savage track, always in great nick and a good test of your game, especially when the wind blows!

Galway GC, my home club and a great track. It's in lovely condition, tight and tricky with small fast greens. I've just checked the time sheet for 19 August and the Club Cup is on that day and the next (36 hole comp) so I'm not sure if visitors can play that day. Give the lads in the pro shop a call, they're more than helpful and always keen to accommodate visitors.

I love Connemara, it's a proper championship links course. It's a bit of a trek from Galway but worth the drive in my opinion.

Oughterard is a lovely parkland course and pretty reasonable.

Athenry - trees and more trees:) I played there recently having not played there in ages and was surprised with how good the condition of the course was. I find it a bit 'up and down the field' though. The time sheet is usually very busy.

Glenlo Abbey is a small 9 hole close to the city centre. It's seen massive investment in the last few years and the condition of the course has improved immeasurably. However, they've recently hiked the green fees for 9 holes to €35 which is a rip off.

Cregmore - a lot of better courses out there.

Some great shouts thanks for putting the posts up folks.

Gonna throw Portumna and maybe Loughrea into the mix too. Might even try squeeze two rounds in.

    Portumna is well worth visiting.

Booked in for a round in Galway Bay. Times suited us best from the other runners and a reasonable deal.

I'm gonna try sneak in another one on the Sunday. Connemara or Portumna.

    Cheers all.

Loughrea would be a good place for your higher handicap pairing for sure. After the first 6 holes, there are a few shorter holes which would be very enjoyable for the lads. Give them plenty of chances of necking a few pars/birdies

    Portumna is a lovely course.

Portumna is a bit of a gem alright, however I'm not sure where the OP is coming from but if it's an area where there's no links course then a trip to Connemara would win in my opinion.

Coming from the capital. Not sure a links will suit two of the lads so we're going with Galway Bay. Cheers though.
