Games are taken from a list of best selling games on the system. I took out American sports games and a few total duds (*cough* Rise of the Robots) unless it was iconic to the system. I grouped together games in a series as well so as not to offend people by cherry picking my personal favourite (Sonic 2 in other words).

    Aladdin
    Altered Beast
    Castlevania Bloodlines/New Generation
    Chuck Rock 2
    Comix Zone
    Dynamite Headdy
    Earthworm Jim
    Ecco the Dolphin (series)
    Fifa (series)
    Flashback
    Golden Axe
    Gunstar Heroes
    James Pond 2: Robocod
    Mega Turrican
    Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
    Micro Machines 2
    Midnight Resistance
    Mortal Kombat 2
    NBA Jam
    Phantasy Star (2, 3 and 4)
    Probotector/Contra Hard Corp
    Ristar
    Road Rash (1, 2 and 3)
    Robocop vs terminator
    Rocket Knight Adventures
    Sensible Soccer
    Shining Force (1 + 2)
    Shining in the Darkness
    Sonic the Hedgehog (1, 2, 3 + Knuckles)
Street Fighter 2 Special Championship edition
    Streets of Rage (1, 2 and 3)
    Strider
Strike series (Desert, Jungle and Urban)
    The Revenge of Shinobi
    The Story of Thor
    Thunderforce 4
    ToeJam and Earl
    Virtua Racing
    Wonderboy in Monster World
World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck

    Let the slaughter commence.

Getting rid of Street Fighter. I was forced to play with a three button pad so it was almost unplayable. Couldn't convince folks to buy a pad just for one game

Johnny you are going to hell for that one along with all the editors of Edge magazine.

Best megadrives game ever gone and altered best still left standing.

Ah, rubbish single player. Awesome in multi. If it makes it easier it narrowly missed out on the list.

Sonic the Hedgehog just wasn't all that good. A speed demon on a 4:3 screen? It just wasn't fun.

Where's Crackdown, Midnight Resistance, Hellfire, Gynoug, Gain Ground, Arcus Odyssey???

Was thinking the mega drive was terrible until I remembered those gems.

No Alien Soldier, Pitfall or Toy Story? Pity. They came out towards the end of the Mega-Drive's life but they proved the old console could still deliver.

I don't think we need to keep criticizing the list do we? Rather be thankful that someone went to the trouble of doing it.

That's fair enough. I'm gonna say Altered Beast. I bought a Mega-Drive after playing Streets of Rage 2 on my neighbour's machine. I was soooo disappointed with AB: looked great but was so clunky I thought my new joypads were busted.

Crackdown, gain ground and hellfire werent big sellers. Gynoug almost got on the list but I thought thunder force 4 better served in its place. Arcus odyssey was never released in Europe. Midnight resistance is on the list.

Alien soldier didn't sell well at all. Anyway Gunstar Heroes has been scientifically proven to be a better game.

Pitfall again didn't sell that we'll and I didn't feel it defined the mega drive. It's also a good if not stellar game.

Toy Story almost got on the list but I feel it was a bit cap even if it was a technical miracle on the system.

Sensible Soccer. I could never understand how anyone liked this. It might be less awful than some of the competition (up yours KICK OFF you piece of crap) but it didn't have the polish or panache of FIFA. And the players moved like caffinated fleas.

 'Twas a brilliant game, and coded by two mates if I'm not mistaken. Endless hours of fun with in on the C64. Turning banana shots up to full in the settings allowed you to curl the ball around yourself and still score.

Yeah some people loved it and it got good reviews but it never "felt" like football to me. The pace felt too frantic. It used to ruin FIFA for me too - after playing SS for 15 minutes, the more realistically-paced FIFA players moved like geriatrics stuck in treacle.

That's the thing though. It was more an arcadey footy game than anything. I don't think they tried to make it a realistic game like FIFA and PES did.

As some one that thinks soccer as a video game doesn't make sense at all, sensi is one of the few soccer games I can stomach. It's a video game first and not a soccer simulation. As a result I find sensible soccer a blast to play while every iteration of Fifa has bored me to big fat salty tears.

Hmm, looks like this has got a little mixed up, Earthwork Jim was already killed a while back.

Right you are. Here's how things stand.

James Pond II goes. It's a poor game that got more attention than it deserved because it was an Amiga game and there were no decent platform games for that. The port was good but the game is still poor.

Johnny beat you to it with gunstar heroes but Castlevania cut deep.

The second best (scientifically proven) game on the mega drive is still there 😉

Hellfire was IR£10 dearer than a regular MD game when it was released (IR£60 V IR£50 iirc), no idea why but it may have contributed to its poor sales.

Yeah it's a great game. I think maybe renovations brought it out? They brought a lot of imports over and charged a little more.

I'd still take gynoug and thunder force 4 over it.

    You know what, feck it.
I don't care if it's a cult classic or not.
Aside from the 2 characters looking cool...and a funky theme tune that I can still do off the top of my head to this day....the gameplay was complete meh and I didn't care for it at all.
And I went back to it not too long ago, and it's still crap.

And they annoyed me even more with the crap game they released on the Menacer (yes, I had one of them overpriced forgotten pieces of junk...got used as normal gun in cops/robbers after about 3 months).

So see ye later Toejam and Earl.

So long Mortal Kombat, you were too limiting to play on the standard controller and you were not the best game on the Megadrive

Robocop vs Terminator is gone. It's a mediocre shooter with a license squandered on it. The over the top gore doesn't disguise the janky combat and level design. Then the gore disappears and is replaced by boring robots.

Pretty sure it's in a few Megadrive collections as Sega owns the rights. It's balls hard but really inventive and a bit of a boss rush.

The Last boss however is so cheap. It takes over an hour to reach him and I could never beat him, except when using the level select code. There's a way to predict his attacks but I never figured it out when I played the game. Pretty sure they ramped the difficulty way up for the Western release.
