Water has now been restored to large parts of Cork City as Irish Water and Cork City Council continue to make good progress on repairing a major burst in a trunk water main close to Lee Road.

It is expected that those areas that are still without water will have their supply restored by approximately 6pm this evening.

The disruption in supply was caused by a burst in a trunk water main supplying many low lying parts of Cork city this morning. Crews working on behalf of Irish Water have now located the burst and isolated it and are carrying out repairs to a section of the pipe. It is expected that this work will be completed in the coming hours after which supply should begin to return to the remaining affected areas.

In the meantime, water has been restored to most of the city centre business district and surrounding areas.

Areas that are still experiencing supply interruptions include Capwell, Ballinlough and Douglas.

Irish Water apologises to all customers for the disruption caused by this incident and thanks them for their patience as we work to resolve it. We will continue to provide updates on this disruption as they become available on the service and supply section of the Irish Water website, www.water.ie, and via local media. Customers can also call our 24-hour customer service line at 1850 278 278 for information.

A major burst occurred unexpectedly on a water main in Cork city yesterday morning. This caused local flooding on the Lee Road and a significant and sudden disruption to water supply for 40,000 customers in Cork city. Given the extent and urgency of this disruption, the burst was located and identified within a relatively short period of time, which allowed crews working on behalf of Irish Water and Cork City Council to return water supply to many of the affected areas, including the city centre business district, by early afternoon and to fully restore a normal supply to all areas once repairs were completed by 9pm last night.

Irish Water acknowledges and apologises for the unexpected disruption caused to business and domestic customers as a result of this incident and thanks them for their patience while we dealt with it. Unfortunately in these situations it is impossible to provide advance notice of a water disruption and every effort was made to carry out repairs as quickly as possible. Given the size and location of the burst, some loss of water supply was therefore unavoidable.

However, by responding immediately and mobilising all available resources to deal with the problem, we were able to restore water supply within a relatively short period of time for the majority of affected customers by redirecting it from other parts of the city. Regular updates were also provided throughout the day via local media to keep the public informed of the situation as it developed.

Repairs were completed slightly early than expected, just before 6pm and full pressure normal supply was restored to all parts of the city by 9pm. (Water pressure must be increased gradually following repairs to avoid the risk of further bursts on weak points of the network).

In relation to water charges applied to our customers, including refunds, Irish Water is regulated by the Commission for Energy Regulation. There has been no change to the non-domestic tariff arrangements since Irish Water took over responsibility for the administration of business water accounts from the local authority. Under this framework, discounts or refunds are provided to customers only where water is unfit for human consumption (i.e. where a boil water notice is imposed by the HSE) for a period of more than 24 hours. Where is meter is in place, as is the case in the vast majority of businesses, no metered charge applies where no water is supplied.

No drinking water restriction was imposed in this case and the unexpected disruption to water supply was returned to all customers within 12 hours and, in many cases, in a much shorter period time. The issue of a refund does not therefore apply in this case.

Any business customers with a query in relation to the process can contact Irish Water on 1850 778 778 or 01 707 2827.
