2017 British Amateur Championship

Dundalk's Caolan Rafferty breaks the 18 hole course record in Prince's GC at the British Amateur by carding a 10 under 62 to win the leading stroke play medalist by 1 shot. The matchplay stage of this championship takes place tomorrow and runs until Saturday where there will be a 36 hole final.

The Top 64 players and ties qualify for the matchplay and last I checked these are the following Irish players that have successfully progressed.

    Caolan Rafferty
    Robin Dawson
    Stuart Grehan
    Conor O'Rourke
    Sean Flanagan
    Paul McBride
    Conor Purcell
    John Ross Galbriath

The winner of this championship will get automatic exemptions into this year's Open Championship and next year's US Open and a likely invite to play in the 2018 Masters. There is also an rule (albeit unofficially) that a GB&I winner of the British Am gets a place on the Walker Cup side that will take on their US counterparts in Los Angeles this September.

Paul McBride teed up at 7:30 this morning and 18 holes played and hes back in the clubhouse for 10:30 am.

There you go tours and professional golfers - elite amateurs can do it in 3 hours, so can you.

Pretty sure they are playing ready golf this year at the championship.

Just the one remaining Irish golfer left in the British Amateur. Paul McBride from the Island Golf Club defeated Jimmy Stanger of the US by 2 holes in the last 32 round played earlier today. In good news this afternoon, he is currently 3 up after 5 against Lytham Trophy champion Jack Singh Brar and victory for the Dubliner will book him a spot in the 1/4 finals of the championship. McBride has a very good record in this event as he reached the semi-finals at Royal Portcawl in Wales last year.

Good news coming through from Royal St. George's this evening. Paul McBride is through to the quarter-finals of the British Amateur Championship after a 1 up win over Englishman Jack Singh Brar in the Last 16 round. McBride faces another Englishman in the shape of Harry Ellis for a place in the semi-finals tomorrow morning.

Rafferty was unlucky in his match, beaten on the 25th
