Athlone case 2013

I'm sure we've all heard of the sickening case where the two girls were raped in Athlone in September 2013. But two things just don't make sense:

    1. Why the guy was never named. Usually after cases when an adult is convicted the news reports would say "Mr. X X, of No. 1 Y Street", but they never gave a name for this man. For example, Graham Dwyer, who also committed a horrific crime, was named and his address was known. Why this person wasn't named is beyond me.

    2. The location of the crime. They didn't even say "the crime took place in X housing estate". Did they actually name where in Athlone this incident took place? If they did, where did it happen? If not, why didn't they?

    Thanks in advance for answers,

Privacy for the victims is the answer to both.

In such cases no information may be reported that may identify the victims. Just ask yourself the question if a relative of yours went through such events would you like if that fact became know.

While it was bad enough in the past in the day of the Internet such victims would always have to live with total strangers knowing.

Where in Athlone did the incident actually happen? Was it in an estate or apartments?

I never understood how naming the man could identify the victims. The girls have 100% rights to anonymity but afaik the man didn't know them.

Could somebody clarify, IIRC the victims weren't from Athlone, would the be correct?

if a person knew the following facts

    1 2 children say sisters
2 The ages of the children
3 The location of the attack
    4 That the children visitors

Many people could identify the victims.

Any person answering your questions could find themselves in serious trouble, as usually the courts order that there is to be no reporting of any information that identifies the victims. Publishing on an internet forum is publishing.

Why do you want to know that detail?

Because in most crimes they will tell you the general area that it happened in. For example, X estate in Athlone. It could be a big estate, so people wouldn't know EXACTLY where it happened.

The main question is, do any of ye know the general area of Athlone where it happened?

I just think it's strange for a general location not to be identified.

The victims had been at a birthday party near the location, would not be rocket science, to work out, once a person knew the location and that there was a birthday party and the victims ages to add 2 and 2.

It is strange not to know the general location, but totally understandable once you accept that information could lead to invasion of privacy.

Have you been thinking about this for 4 years?

As you can see, I have distilled your questions above and what seemed like curiosity about this case (in your very first posts on boards) is seriously venturing into the sordid and obsessional.

It happened on the far side of Athlone.
