Worried about my Dad.

My Dad's health isn't great but my problem is he isn't helping himself.

He has a problem with his heart with his muscle strength around the heart being very weak. He also suffers from stomach ulcers and they thought he may have had colitis.
However these problems could be managed but he is carrying a lot of weight and is in denial about it all. He has gotten a lot heavier over the last few years.
His diet is very poor and he constantly feels poorly but why wouldn't he when he's filling himself with processed ****e like biscuits, cakes ice creams etc. He claims that that is all he can get a taste for and everything else is like 'eating grass' but it's all excuses as he has a real sweet tooth and is using the ulcers as an excuse to eat ****.

Wherever we call him on it he gets defensive and just doesn't seem to see much wrong with it. He is quite old fashioned but I'm sure he has suffered from some mental illness over the years but he grew up in a time when it wasnt seen as real. I get the feeling that he couldn't care less if he dies as he feels so poorly. He won't speak to anyone so it's really hard to deal with.

    Any advice?
    Thanks

Could you call his local Public Health Nurse and talk through your concerns? They may call out to him and assess his needs and provide him with advice. It is very difficult when people won't look after themselves especially when you know it is exasperating an existing health issue.

Could be worth a shot. Thank you

All you can really do is talk to the nurse or the GP. People like this can be very resistant to change because they've spent so long living that way. They'd rather die than give up drinking/smoking/eating badly/etc.

    Hi OP

As a parent i find it very hard to accept criticism from my children. I think this is a natural reaction - however it doesn't mean they don't have a point.

can you perhaps try a different strategy, by getting someone like your father brother or sister, etc to make a gentle intervention.
or his GP as suggested above?
