Seagulls take ducklings on Ireland's Eye

Saw something on Ireland's Eye at the weekend I thought was unusual: a duck with nine ducklings.

She had obviously managed to keep the eggs safe til they hatched, and the ducklings were following her around the way ducklings do.

But then she took then into the water, and within a couple of minutes, seagulls had taken them all.

Thought it was worth a mention.

Sad, but possibly a poor choice of nesting location for a duck. I found a Mallard's nest on Dalkey Island years ago and I suspect that its occupants may have met the same fate.

It was the choice of location that intrigued me.

The seagulls are getting a bad name for themselves these days!
