Hi I'm trying to buy a lhd car from France, found it on autoscout24.com. i know in Ireland that the AA will go to the seller location and inspect a car for 250 euro plus, but does anybody know of an equivalent in France that i could arrange from here in Ireland. I don't want to fly across, take the car to a garage and find that it's a dudd, I'd rather find it out from my couch here :)

Also, any tips on buying car and on formalities in France, ie how to check its history and transfer ownership, make payment etc.
    I've zero French. Merci

    Thanks Biko,

I'm looking into registering the car, as i won't have an address in France. Postal registration is possible but i don't know if i can leave the country before the car is registered in my name. It may mean hanging around for a few days to work through paperwork.

Also I've read that the seller's insurance is valid until midnight on the day of purchase so if i leave the country on that day it could cut out a bit of difficulty in getting an Irish company to cover it.

I strongly doubt you can register French registered car in your name, if you are not resident in France.

Normally anyone buying cars in France for export, bring it on a trailer without reg plates (as they have to be left in France when previous owner deregisters the car).

You should get a reg cert which registration office will stamp as deregistered. That should be good enough to register it with VRT/NCT crowd in Ireland.
