Can anyone tell me why people get so confused about these 2 words?!

It's something that is really getting on my wick of late.

I have been to the shop, not I have being to the shop.

I fell after being tripped, not I fell after been tripped.

Arrrghhh!! Rant over, please and thankyou!

People get the mixed up because they sound alike and hear/speak them more often than they see/write them down. Similar to Could of/could have.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I don't have a problem with people being unable to spell some words, my own personal problem words are satellite and accommodation mainly due to not knowing whether some letters should be single or double.

But misspelling a word as a totally different, but similarly sounding, word with a totally different meaning really annoys me. Examples on boards abound, such as ...

    taught - thought
    break - brake
    tread - thread
    affect - effect
    college - collage
    quite - quiet

They're pronounced much the same way most of the time, with the 'g' in being rarely heard, so people get lazy and type them incorrectly.

I'd imagine that most of the people who do it actually know the difference and would get it right when writing something of more importance. Facebook posts and boards comments...who cares. It's a bit sad when people highlight some spelling or grammar mistake.

UNLESS it's a mistake in a post which is itself commenting about another poster's mistake. Then it's absolutely fair game.

Really pisses me off when I see that kind of mistake on signs and advertising though - just today I saw an ad for a BBC 4 series on Japan, and it had a number of mistakes with possessive apostrophes. 'We will explore it's unique history' and similar.

    That's the BBC FFS.

I recently posted something with "being" instead of "been". I am very much aware of the difference between been/being, there/their/they're, its/it's and all of that.

Sometimes people just type the wrong word without thinking.

Thank you for providing me a platform to publicly confess this. :)

Its a lighthearted thread about my own personal feelings on a general mistake people make, not a specific mistake by a specific person on a specific thread, if you think its sad don't read it! And whatever you do don't get yourself worked up! As you say, who cares! :P

No, this thread isn't sad at all, I'm talking about being a grammar nazi just for cheap internet points in a thread that is about something unrelated.

I notice a lot of people on boards saying weary instead of wary and advice instead of advise.

I'm weary of walking alone at night, can anyone advice me where I can get a taxi? - that sort of thing.

    Maybe it's autocorrect

I can't stand when people use apostrophes in plural's.

Many people seem to think they are required for words ending in a vowel such as taxi's.

Well that's certainly the most ambiguous sentence I've ever seen used to illustrate the difference between two words!
