Pancreatitis

My dog was diagnosed with Pancreatitis today. She has only been sick since yesterday evening but was very lethargic today so I brought her into the vets. After some tests and an ultrasound he has diagnosed Pancreatitis . He gave her antibiotics and anti inflammatory injections as well as one for the pain.

The vet said she could come home today but have to bring her in the morning again for fluids. He wants her not to have any food and will give it intravenously instead. He let her come home as she does not do well if she is not with me!

I am wondering if anybody has experience with this. She is only 4 in August so still quite young. She is also a large dog but not overweight and is very active and fit. She does not have a high fat diet as far as I know but will have to check her food out tomorrow (I empty the big bag into a container so will have to go into the pet shop!).

My dog had this and came through it, we were very careful with the diet. The royal canin low-fat GI diet did wonders for her.

Had this as well with an old collie. He came through after a week of hospitalization. He's now on a low fat diet (burns senior) and that's doing well for him, it never came back.

Am hoping Nymeria does as well. She had an alright night last night... bit of a temperature but she was able to sleep. I am on my way now to bring her in to get fluids etc.. hoping that the vet thinks she is doing better. I hate when she is sick.. she is hard to read and trys to pretend that nothing is wrong!

I was told one of the first signs is drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot.But not sure if I recall correctly. Maybe something to ask? Fingers crossed.

How is she getting on today? Bailey had suspected panc. once time and we were sent for a scan but they didn't bother doing it because he didn't have the other classic symptoms.. They said a dog could have a flare up or high blood counts if they ate something fatty and then be fine again - could she have scavenged something? My vet said he's 'at risk' of it so I keep him on a low fat diet and apart from 2 accidents before I changed his food around - one on my bed  (that poo WHOOOSH sound woke me up pretty quick) and t'other on the new carpet  he's been fine!

Just got home with her now. She is doing much better... she spent the day in the vets on fluids and got long lasting antibiotics . She is to have no food today or tomorrow and can then start her eating again. I was away for a few days and she was given a lot of peanut butter as a treat... She normally gets some but maybe twice a week and she was getting it twice a day. She was also given Misfits Wonky Chomp Dog Treats. She would normally never get anything like that.
That was last week Sunday through to Thursday and when I got back Thursday she had me out in the garden a few times that night for the toilet. She then seemed ok and was eating/drinking until Sunday night. Happened very fast which had me very worried!

She has to go back next week and I will be discussing diet and the vet will follow up and do more tests. For now he said once she improved she should be fine.

Quite question! Does an Intravenous drip with anti-inflammatory include food? Ive been told that Nymeria can't have food until Thursday... she is not normally that mad about food if she has not worked up an appitite but now she is sitting on the mat in the kitchen beside where she normally gets fed and barking and wooing!

Ill call the vet tomorrow to find out how stick it is that she is not to eat... if anybody has a dog that had it maybe they can tell me if she can have anything at all.

Ah hopefully it was the treats that did it and it's not something that'll cause her problems long term! Surely the appetite is a good sign - when my friends dog was very sick with it half the battle was getting him to eat. Fingers crossed for her

I am taking her appetite as a great sign! But I am too worried to give her something to eat incase she really should be fasting the the full 3 days... Im not sure if eating will effect the pancreas straight away... Am tempted to give her a peeled carrot (her fav treat!). Ill call the vet in the morning and ask if I have to wait until Thursday.

Yes her blood sugar levels are elevated and she is waiting on more results from blood tests tomorrow. The vet just said that I was not to be worrying about why she is so sick now and that when she is better next week we can look into that and at her food and diet etc

I have been on google and would be a bit worried about diabetes etc but am going to wait and see how she is. She has fallen asleep here with me without having anything to eat so will wait until the morning and call the vet.

She had an ultrasound and the pancreas is very enflamed.

she will be fine high blood sugar is a typical sign of pancreatitis your vet seems on the ball

once the inflammation settles she will be booming again follow the vets advice you wont know her in a week

its terrible when there sick and start to recover and want food food and more food

don't be worried about diabetes that will settle when the pancreas recovers

looking back over your post I would think your culpit is excess peanut butter as it would be considered high fat content food which is known to cause pancreatitis in dogs

look up can dogs eat peanut butter and can it cause pancreatitis sorry cant post a link for some reason
