As the title suggests... penneys flip flops are like €2.50 and Havianas/ nike / branded approx 20....

What is the benefit of buying more expensive flip flops?

Mostly the fact that they have a designer label on them.

I bet you could figure this out all on your own, go on have a try

Penny's flipflops flatten (the foam under the heel) very quickly so don't last long, Haviananas will not flatten easily and will last years (mine are 5 years old).

But if you want to get trendy shoes or tend to loose your flipflops then cheap is fine.

Speaking as a flip-flop veteran, the VERY cheapest will quickly squash flat as GingerLily pointed out.

Slightly dearer though not by much, simple footbed-style flips from many boutiques, chain stores etc will last a bit longer and give good service for a summer, but their weak point is the toe-post, which eventually gets loose or detached.

Spend serious money, and Fit-flops will last for years and years and years....and blissfully comfortable...I recommend unreservedly, if you have the cash to spend.

I've a pair of Havaianas for about four years and they still look perfect. I bought a cheap Penneys pair last week and the toe bit has already snapped.
Havaiana also do cool vibrant colours which I never see anywhere else. Penneys ones are too foamy I find and I just don't trust the grip on the sole.

Yeah I was in penneys today looking at them. They have lovely ones but... posters here are right. The soles look like slip city ... There's no grip to them.

Ipanema also have decent stuff. I usually get them or Havaianas together with whatever else I am ordering on spartoo or yoox so the cost of carriage isn't insane. I wear flip-flops a lot in the house instead of slippers and they tend to last me a few years. But if you are buying something for a week on holidays then I would buy whatever is handy.

I have 20 + pairs of havainas ( I know addicted) and they are amazing, they are the only brand of flip flop that never burns/ blisters my feet....they last tears and years too !!

If you're talking basic flip flop, then I'd say Havaianas or similar. However, end of the day, they are still a basic plastic flip flop. I don't personally think you get a 10x better flip flop for 10x the price.

If you have the money, I would recommend Fit Flop or similar. They are extremely robust and provide much more support.

I think Havainas are better because they are rubber, the majority of cheap flip flops are plastic and although they usually look as good I find them very hard on my feet and I get loads of burns and blisters. It's a personal opinion but I think fit flops are often really ugly !!

Yeah I am not fan of fit flops either. For the same amount you can get a lot better looking leather sandals/flip flops. But for sandy beaches nothing beats Havaianas or Ipanemas.

Fit flops remind me of something a nun would wear

I find that the Penny's and Dunne's ones both flatten easily if they are foam, if hard soled then they are too hard. Also the plastic bit in between the toes cuts the toes off me. I have two pairs of Havainas and they are brilliant, they don't cut and the colour has lasted in them, still as bright as the first day i got them. Fit Flop, my mother has them, not very attractive looking, but on occasion i have slipped them on and they are ridiculously comfortable.

They are flip flops. They are not made to last (or look fashionable)

What I like about Fit Flops is the thicker sole, which means you walk around towns, streets, paths, hills etc while on holidays or even here. There's a wide range available online so it's not too hard to find a good looking pair. For some reason, only the really dull ones seem to make it to the shops here.

I wear flip flops in one form or another all year round (after work when I've changed, weekends etc) and I have a selection but I don't have any of the very basic type (i.e. Havianas). I suppose I've gotten to the point in my life where I prefer a bit more structure.

Another option would be Nike, Adidas type flip flops. Again, they tend to have stronger soles etc

This. Some of the Penneys ones are downright dangerous.

There's very little difference, Penney's flip flops don't last very long but how long would you use a pair of flip flops for?

I have a pair of flip flops by Tommy Hilfiger which I've owned since 2005 and they are perfect still. They have a nice arch support built in and are very comfortable.
I bought a pair by Roxy before which fell apart in 6 weeks.
I bought a pair from Dunnes recently as I was getting a pedicure, and had forgotten to bring some with me. There was a shower of rain while I was getting a pedicure and I couldn't keep my grip on walking back out onto the street in them. It was dangerous.
