    Hi all.

My mother is now looking for a new (to her) car. It's a 1.2 petrol engine one owner 2006 skoda Fabia estate with 41,000 miles. What's your opinions? Thanks.

Edit: Sorry thread title is wrong it's a skoda Fabia estate.

I think that's the same 3 cylinder engine from the Polo which is a horrible engine. They are very unrefined and are not particularly reliable, think they have timing chain issues.

Would you advise to leave it where it is? It would be a main dealer that's selling it.

I wouldn't buy one, they're not a great engine, and they've gone out of their way to make it feel worse than a polo.

What sort of warranty is a main dealer offering on an 11 year old car?

    3 months.

Ok but what's covered for 3 months? On a car that age I'd say the bare minimum - engine and gearbox with possibly a mileage limitation too ie 3 months or 3000 mile, whichever comes first. Also how is it price towards similar cars being sold privately? A main dealer is going to charge a premium to cover the cost of a warranty on a car of that age which can bump up the price of the car above its market value.

The 1.2 TSI is 4 cylinder.

    If it's the 3 cylinder , chain driven engine,no problem,as I had an 08 one,noisy,rattly,but economic,dependable,,I rated mine as v good

2k all in. New n.c.t also. It really wouldn't bother my mother if it sounded like a bag of spanners. But she would want something fairly reliable.

    A shot at reliability.

Just browse through the DIY section on here alone and see how many people have Polos/ Fabias/ Ibizas with that engine that they can not get through an NCT emissions test where some mechanic has been spunking air flow and oxygen sensors and catalytic converters at them with your money only to then finally decide they need a top end rebuild.

    They are pure rubbish.

Something like this for €2150 would be a much better bet IMO.

I can't say I'd agree with HJ in that case. That engine has known issues and I've seen a good few of them first hand.

What problems exactly Colm are you referring too? I did a search but I can only find threads on the older model Fabias.

I'm all for Japanese cars. But the low mileage on the Fabia is the main thing that has interested my mother in this particular car.

The Yaris, it was brought to the mechanic and he says a second hand door and back brake shoes will be required soon. So with that in mind and the current issues it's looking like a few hundred is needed to be spent on this Yaris. I've done a search on done deal an there are 99 Yaris's going for max 200-300 with n.c.t with lower mileage than our Yaris (158,000). Therefore, it's isn't sensible to fix the Yaris and that is why she is looking at a new car.
