Why did RTE do a several hour live coverage of this last night ? I could understand if it was an RTE news channel (almost) ........I as a license payer don't remember being asked if I wanted this coverage

Do RTE ask viewers what they want to see?

Do you actually pay your licence? Or are you just saying that for this thread?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,875 ✭✭✭irelandrover

Do you often get consulted by RTE on what they should show?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,731 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

I was never asked if I wanted to finance the crime against humanity that is First Dates Ireland.

I'd watch round the clock UK election coverage over Fair City.

Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to see soccer on RTE2, but they keep showing it too. This is an outrage! I demand to be personally consulted on the entire schedule!

It has more to do with Ireland than basically any other country's election around the world.

I'd imagine because a large chunk of the population on the island could either vote in the election, or are very interested in the outcome.

Its got plenty to do with Ireland, they are our neighbor, we share there language and culture, our biggest trade partner, the outcome of this effects Brexit which could have an untold effect on us.

More important than the US election between a reality TV star and an ex presidents wife, which got a nauseating amount of coverage.

Politics in the UK has massive implications for this country.

Anyone who doesn't understand that hasn't a clue.

Well part of this island votes in those elections and what happens over there as we can see from brexit and the north has huge implications for us.

    It's not rocket science.

As well as the reasons already given, the DUP being likely kingmakers shows just how relevant it can be to us.

Same reason we get English teams shown to us on Champions League nights, same reason we get Eastenders shown to us, same reason you're making this thread. The UK are our nearest neighbours and they have an influence on our population whether you want to acknowledge it or not.

it's aimed at my ilk. Absolutely love politics & was glued to the coverage across all stations till the early hours. Plenty of programming that I don't like on RTE but I don't expect it all to be to my taste. I do rather whinge about the Angelus mind you.

It has more to do with Ireland than basically any other country's election around the world.
Our PR system means that our governments are generally a consensus of the centre so arguably it's more important than an election here especially with Brexit.

Also what happens in Northern Ireland is of more than passing interest. There is now no Irish Nationalist voice in Westminster.

We are now in the position where we are relying on the DUP to limit the damage Brexit will do to this island.

Because the number of people with an interest in the external factors that influence our economy (and society)is greater than the number of people who will cut off their own noses in order to maintain a grudge against the UK.

Feel sorry for the young people over there. Looks a deeply divided place between young people trying to struggle to make a start for themselves and a decrepit older generation still infatuated with the phantom menace of Thatcher

What would you have rathered OP, reruns of Fair City, Nationwide, and EuroNews/France24? Or you could have just went to bed.

But the outcome of this election does effect us. We share a land mass, and a border, which both could have emplications on either side due to Brexit alone, and now with a hung parliament, a possible change in leadership, all could be up for debate and discussion again.

I thought it was a great program.
Will they be making a series from it?
Could go down well in the UK;)

Dont think it needs to be again reiterated what a stupid question you asked as its been answered already by several posters but why do you think being a license payer gives you any say over what RTE show?

****ers are always wasting air time with ****ty soccer and other such nonsense, don't remember being asked about that either.

edit: Seamus has an equally great mind as mine.

Obviously important to Ireland, but did we really need an Irish look at it? Already great coverage from numerous free to air U.K. channels, which most people here have.

Yes we did. It's relevant to all of us and need an Irish perspective. You have BBC NI but other news channels coverage have little interest in Irish matters.

And why should you or anyone else get to dictate what the rest of us watch or not watch?

Like it or not what happens in Britain does impact us - six of counties are governed by the British and Brexit will undoubtedly affect our economy.

I for one think it's of vital importance that we know who will be overseeing all this.

Feel for you. If only there was were different channels you could watch or an off switch you could click, or something like Netflix, Prime, etc available that you could change to. Harsh times.

Imagine the sh*t that would be on if the RTE schedule was decided by the people of Ireland...

Tipping Point on 24 hours a day. Interspersed with live executions of travellers, exposés on the private lives of the children of dead celebrities, and celebrity sodomy island.

so RTE are only allowed what YOU want?

Uk election result was extremely important for Ireland and having an Irish angle on results as they came in was interesting.

People said that sterling would tank today to 92p causing major problems for Irish exporters, one of the contributors said that if conservatives did not get a majority then a much softer brexit would happen and this would mean little change initially in currency market and gradual stregthening of sterling.

That alone was very pertinent to Irealnd and not something any of the UK stations would ahve even looked at.

Look at the currency today - went initially to 88.5p has dropped back to under 87.5p - just a touch over the levl of last couple of days.

Frankly - I'd prefer if they dropped all the expensive soccer and gaa coverage which costs an absolute fortune. But I understand that some licence payers like soccer & gaa and that ALL tastes have to be catreed for, not just mine.

    BREXIT .....

Neighbouring state which shares a land border with this state, ergo several political parties on this island are also involved. Add in 'Brexit' and RTE has more than enough reason to broadcast what's going on next door.

Its not like we are unaffected or influenced by the neighbours, is it?

Brexit may have a massive impact on the ROI, so why wouldn't we be interested?

Well .... we are obsessed with our nearest neighbour, all you have to do is tune into RTE on a Saturday afternoon and hear that Burton Albion have just equalised against Blackburn Rovers!
Me? I had better things to do last night than tune into RTE's election coverage and Peep Show on GOLD channel was one of them! :)

Three things that grate, calling the U.K 'England', regarding it as a 'foreign country' and thirdly the absurd notion that all English people sound like Hugh Grant or Danny Dyer, has anyone heard of a Lancashire, Yorkshire, Stoke, Manchester, Sunderland, Bristol or Cornish accent?

There is ZERO integrity in politicians. Neither corbyn nor may deserve to be leader. Both took a dangerous side in NI...simply to benefit themselves ..it's disgusting. And homophobia and sexism is rife in the DUP. Even the Tories must be embarrassed now. In fact both sides should be embarrassed. Corbyn sympathizing with the IRA was shameful. May's coalition is self serving. The DUP strangely want something i never thoght they would ..a soft border with the ROI. But they don't want LGBT rights ?? I don't see how May could partner with them.
