Renting apartment - claiming Rent a room relief

Whats to stop an apartment owner who does not live in the apartment anymore,
(but for example lives with a partner who also owns an apartment / house) claiming he/she still lives there and claim the 14k per annum rent a room relief.

The way the rental market is currently, Im sure potential tenants would be quite happy to have an apartment to themselves, on the basis they have to confirm they were only renting a room should the issue ever arise down the tracks.

in theory how could revenue prove you didn't live in the apartment and rent a room?

    Try it and see.

But before you do, consider that you have been scratching your head and thinking it through for a few days max. Revenue, on the other hand, have this as their bread and butter, and they have years of experience.

    Try it and see.

Revenue have an entire section dealing with just these type queries.
Don't do it. You will be caught.
