With the weather being the way it is, our garden is quite wet, the dogs have free access to inside and out, the only problem is that every few minutes, they decide to migrate inside and they bring their muddy paws with them.
How do you deal with this, there are footprints everywhere, I like they can move between the garden and inside easily and don't want to remove that option but im sick of washing the floors.

I have mats/runners down in high traffic areas so they don't skid everywhere which absorbs most of it and then steam mop the floors and mats once a week.

We went to extreme lengths and put fake grass down! We had always planned to anyway, we built a shed in our garden and the grass never grew back properly after all the moving of soil and walking over it. Got it done about a month ago and it's great. Still wet paws if it's raining out but no more mucky feet or grass dragged in. Dog loves it too, has already spent more time on it in the last month than in 8 months on the old patch that was there.

Up to then we had a few mats but they never really done the job, more often than not she used to try and jump these as a type of game.

It is expensive but I think for us long term it will work out well. But like I said we were always planning on putting it down anyway, just got it done a little quicker than planned, and glad we did.

Our lads are mostly in but head out for about 20 minutes every couple of hours...in this weather we don't give free reign coming back in ...they knock on back patio door when ready and I got a large bath mat sort of thing at back door and they know they have to stand on this for a couple of minutes before galloping around the house...the mats soak up most of the mucky water not all but it's a lot easier that just letting them straight back in.
The mat is washed then ever evening.,

Some problems simply don't have solutions.

I keep the hair on the feet short... anything that comes down below the pads that adds to mud on the floor is carefully cut away... it makes a difference!
In wet weather, I put a temporary fleece blanket on the floor (as well as the more permanent large rubber-backed mats) which helps to absorb the worst of the wetness and mud... I get the dogs to walk around on the fleece blanket before they can go any further. I dry the blanket out every night then, or replace it if it's very wet/muddy.
But hoovers and mops are never too far away either :D

I bought a turtle mat on amazon. Thought it was mental money at the time but i have cream tiles and was being driven demented!
Doggie comes in and he's always so excited that he dances round on the mat. It is unbelievably absorbent. Worth every penny
BTW even works well for the husband that never learned the skill of wiping his feet!

And some have very easy solutions and in this case two very easy solutions.

Either lock the dogs out or lock them in. Both solves the problem.

Em no not really....they still have to go outside to the toilet or for a walk!

I have mats both inside and outside my front and back doors. Still get a few mucky paw marks but most are absorbed by the mats.

Alternatively, you could try this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJfE85yQCTY

That's what we do too, except I just have old sheets that I set down on the hall floor when she comes in, then give her a good rub with one of the towels that I've set aside for the dog, so her paws are fairly dry when she's allowed to go into the rest of the house. We have tiles downstairs so that helps too of course.

But I just try not to let her in by the "wrong" entrance (i.e. If th e towels are at tht front door she has to come round there, but sometimes I bring the stuff over to the kitchen door so she can come in there then. Depends how dirty it all is.

Works fine, she just waits till we dry her.

Yes but that's very different to free reign to come and go. They can be cleaned and dried at the back door coming back from a walk etc.

I tried to teach that to Bailey YEARS ago - he flipped all the mats in a frenzy lol!! Besides my two come in playing 'the mats are lava' and dodge them when they have wet feed lol :pac:

Our dachshund gets his paws (and sometimes wet belly) wiped before he comes in from the back yard.

I never understood people letting their dogs run in and out of the house.

Instead of getting the mop out every single time - you could get floor wipes? We get ones in Aldi for our messy cats and wouldn't be without them! :)

We did but she wasn't allowed to march into the house from the garden.

My 3 come and go as they want, we have a hugarug inside the back door, 3 mats outside, and cream tiles. I've never had a problem with mucky floors. Mind you it took me a long time to find a machine washable rug that did the job. The hug a rug was worth it I have 3 others throughout the house.

My dogs walk in the house, at least they have some manners, 😠running is not tolerated,
