Browsers not displaying any web pages

    Hi all,

My laptop is connected to home WiFi, I type any web page into the bar of any browser, I get 'connected to (site)' on the bottom left, but the page doesn't load. Any ideas?

It's Windows 8.1, same problem whether it's Firefox, chrome or explorer. Virus scan showed no threats. Tried disconnecting and reconnecting to WiFi and turned laptop off and on again, no joy :(

Edited to add: all other devices in the house are working normally
Also: Just tried it in safe mode, browsers do work then.

Can you ping, by name or IP a site from the command prompt?

    Yes, that gets a reply.

Have you enabled a proxy by mistake? Had something similar to this recently with a nieces PC. Was able to ping google, phones and tablets were working fine on wireless. Chrome and IE failed on the PC. Checked proxy settings and was on and pointing to 127.0.0.0 localhost. Switched off and all good again.

Check IE/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings and see if it enabled. Although you are getting a "connected to site" message this might not be it.

    Could it be a virus?

@DVD-Lots, just checked, no, no proxy enabled.

@jonnycivic, I ran avg virus scan and it brought up no threats.

Get another anti-virus programme and see if that reports any differently.

    Try Malwarebytes Free.

If that doesn't work try resetting your browser:

    On Google Chrome:
    a. Click the Chrome menu icon, and select Settings.
    b. In the On startup section, click Set Pages.
    c. Delete the malicious pages from the Startup pages list.
    d. Find the Show Home button option and select Change.
    e. In the Open this page field, delete the malicious search engine page.
    f. In the Search section, select Manage search engines.
    g. Select the malicious search engine page and remove from the list.
    On Internet Explorer:
    a. Select the Tools tab and then select Internet Options.
    A new window opens.
    b. In the Advanced tab, select Reset.
    c. Check the Delete personal settings box.
    d. Click the Reset button.
    On Mozilla Firefox:
    a. Enable the browser Menu Bar by clicking the blank space near the page tabs.
    b. Click the Help tab, and go to Troubleshooting information.
    A new window opens.
    c. Select Reset Firefox.
    On Safari:
    a. Select the Safari tab and then select Preferences.
    A new window opens.
    b. In the Privacy tab, the Manage Website Data… button.
    A new window opens.
    c. Click the Remove All button.

Does it work correctly on other networks?

Open Chrome, press F12 to open Developer Tools and go to the Network tab. Then go to a website (with the Network tab still open). This will show you what requests are being sent out and what responses are coming back.

worth taking a few seconds to clear dns maybe.

ipconfig /flushdns at the command prompt.
