Extending wifi signal

I currently have poor wifi upstairs and am looking to get it working there but don't want to risk setting it up wrong.
I can get wifi everywhere but upstairs is just not reliable.
I cant add something to the hall downstairs cause there's no socket

My options are, add something downstairs near the current router - not sure if will actually extend anything cause it's close to the router?

Add something at the top of the stairs, can get signal there but it's not a reliable connection so not sure if it will fix the problem?

Ive read that something like this would work better that an extender and would prevent having to disconnect from the downstairs network when you go upstairs to get the benefit of a reliable network - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MUVFOH6/?tag=repeat0f-20

but that's very pricy, can anyone recommend anything or what the best of my 2 setup options is
