    Hi,

Our car smells of oil and our local ford dealer said the "seal" from the power steering pump was gone but you couldn't buy a replacement seal we would have to buy the power steering pump. Total cost to supply and fit €350. Any suggestions? Alternatives? Is this a big job?

    Thanks

You could try shopping around but to buy the whole pump supply and fit via a main dealer, that price doesn't seem to bad. Have a look and see what those pumps are to buy supply-only. They are silly money on eBay.

Thanks, they are mad money on ebay (500+). Is it a straight forward job to put them in? Would I be better to stick with the ford dealer? Time to get rid of the smax, just spent €1000 on self levelling shock absorbers and now this!

Once off the ground, the task of replacing the unit isn't too bad. However I'm pretty sure that that with replacement that the steering will need to be reprogramed / recalibrated and this will need dealer level or similar diagnostics to do properly.

Granted €350 is not to be sniffed at, but for this job through the dealer, it doesn't seem too bad compared to what it could otherwise be.

I also feel your pain though about mounting repair bills. I have been caught myself between paying for repairs and not being able to trade up and out of the sort of mileage that "chain failures" start to occur.
