Inset Gas Stove Vs Oil

Need a bit of advice on stoves. Long story very short, my mother put in an open gas fire into the sitting room to heat it for the 10 times a year the room is used. She wanted the convenience of gas and liked the open fire look that she saw somewhere else.

Needless to say the open gas fire was burning through gas (no pun intended) and was providing very little heat so, rather than throw good money after bad she decided to cut her losses and get it replaced.

The house has OFCH and as such she thought that an oil stove might make more sense. However because of the nature of the existing fireplace, the stove would project fully into the sitting room which would be a disaster in my opinion.

My thinking is that, as the gas line is already in, (fed from a tall red propane tank outside) that an inset stove would be a better solution as it would fit into the existing fireplace. Also, on first glance the efficiencies between the oil and gas stoves are the same.

My mother is cautious about going down the gas route again and is worried that if we get this inset stove installed and find that there's no heat from that either then we've wasted more money. An inset solid fuel burning stove isn't really an option as we already have one in the kitchen plus she wants the convenience of just being able to switch it on. "instant heat" as she says.

All advice and guidance greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

Your first gas fire was probably a "Decorative coal affect fire"
Decorative been the main point, its a decoration rather than a source of heat.
Stoves will give the kw output on brochure.

Been used 10 times a year, always made me laugh on my jobs, if it's there, it will be used a lot more in my experience.
But I'm years out of the gas trade now.

Bottle gas is not cheap to run.

Hopefully my betters here can give you more advice.
What size room do you need to heat ?
