    Hi,

Im looking for advice on applying for child benefits from the south while currently living in North.

We're both working in the south but currently living in the north. Our child was also born in the North so we're just wondering what the procedure is for a applying for child benefits in the south and how do we get our child a pps number or is that required?

You would be eligible for CB in the country you live in.

No, it's the done thing and in EU law to apply for child benefit from the country you work in and not necessarily reside in.

“Cross border workers must apply for child benefit in the country where they work. Unless one parent is employed or is self employed on each side of the border, then they should apply in the country of residence of the children.” Source – www.welfare.ie – page 11, example 11"

The question I'm wondering about is for the application, whether or not a pps number for the child is required when the newborn does not receive this when born outside of the ROI. If it's required how do we go about getting this?

If your child is not born in Ireland or their birth is not registered within the required time (3 months) you must fill in Child Benefit (form CB1) (pdf). You must send this form (CB1) with a copy of your baby's birth certificate (if your baby was not born in Ireland) by FREEPOST to the Child Benefit Section - see 'Where to apply' below. Birth certificates are not required for children born in the State.

It seems you won't need the pps number for your little one.
    Sorry I was confused first!!
