Reduce JPEG file for canvas print

Hi, I wish to order a canvas print online. The JPEG file I intend to use is 25mb. Most websites (Photobox etc) have a 10mb upload limit.

What is the best way to reduce the file size, while maintaining the quality needed for a 50x40cm print. Most on-line compression tools seems to reduce the file size considerably for email etc, I think this may be too much for my purposes though. I don't have access to any professional photo editing software. Thanks.

You could try with GIMP (no really that's what it's called).

But you may have to sacrifice quality to reduce the file size.

IIRC photobox allow you to upload via FTP.

    300 DPI, 24bit, 33cm x 25cm = 35MB. Approx.

So if you're talking a 50MB file being appropriate without even using CYMK. If the print shop are limiting you to 10MB they're not concerned with quality.

    that's uncompressed though.
i just saved a busy enough photo - 12MP (2848 x 4288, RGB and 8 bits per channel), so 35MB uncomressed - as a JPG with a quality of 10 in photoshop, and the file size was less than 5MB.
saving at a quality of 12 in PS resulted in a 10.7MB file. but printing on canvas, i doubt you'd see the difference.

Send the file by wetransfer, the free version allows you to send 2gigabytes

Thanks for replies. Sorted now, Photobox didn't seem to have the same restriction when uploading the file to the albums area, and was able to apply that to the canvas selection.
