Tips for choosing lanes

I have been learning to drive recently and I am finding it hard to choose lanes in places I've never been before.

Particularly when approaching lights sometimes the left lane is for people turning left and sometimes both. Ditto with the right lane. When your close enough and there's no traffic covering the road usually there are makings on the road.

Anyone got any tips on how to choose the correct lane?

Usually the left lane is for turning left and going straight. I wouldn't go in the right lane unless turning right.

Yes there are exceptions all over the country but that's the general rule of thumb.

Look out for a No-Left-Turn or No-Right-Turn sign.

Generally better to stay in the left lane, as cars turning right will need to wait for a break in the traffic, and you'll be waiting behind them.

Many years of driving have taught me that by and large the lane with the most traffic is the one you need to be in. :D

I drive in new places all the time and just keep an eye on road markings and sign posts.
Often it's fine to stop and put the indicators on to switch, people will let you in.

Occasionally I will end up the wrong lane and there is no way I can change.
If this happens, don't panic and just follow your lane and try to get the chance to turn later (maybe at the next intersection).

Another good general rule of thumb is turn left stay left. If there is no double lane turn and you're turning out into incoming traffic it's good to stay in the lane that you turn.
