Don't mind me asking... But why would you want to roll it?

Is the purpose of rolling not germination?
If its starting to sprout sure the job is done.

Isn't rolling supposed to help it strike, and if tis coming up now, job done...

I think if you got rain after setting, be perfect...

Edit : Pah, I should have read 20Silkcut response before posting ;)

Would you chain harrow instead of rolling or do both

I always rolled the barley after sowing to manage leather jackets and to press the seed in..
I thought someone told me before if you rolled a germinating seed it would do more damage than good..
The crows are in it strong too

Well I sowed last night and chain harrowed aswell to put soil over it. Tried rolling a few rows first but there was too much left open and I thought the birds would have a field day ( pun intended) so chain harrowed snd Ellie under half of it last night. Will roll the rest today if it stays dry as want to ensure it strikes but also to bury the stones. Plenty of them ðŸ˜

If the seeds have struck then there is no addition to rolling now other than wasting your time and diesel. I presume you have had good rainfall since sowing which would have compacted the ground enabling the seeds to strike.

More or less, to improve soil=seed contact for minerals like manganese which can be tricky and pest cotrol. Can help thicken a poor cereal crop
