Hi everyone! I've never posted boards before so hopefully I'm doing this right and someone actually sees my post :)

Basically what I want to find out is are there any decent, recognised distant learning courses available to take in the area of animal care?
I took a level 5 course this year in animal care and veterinary assisting and was planning on moving on to study veterinary nursing in st.johns in cork next year. I was offered a place but unfortunately I'm not in a position financially to make a move to cork right now and they don't allow you to defer the course. So I'm hoping there's a distance learning course I could do in a similar area that would allow me to work with animals in a professional capacity as I doubt I'll be lucky enough to be offered cork again next year :( any help or advice would be greatly appreciated:)

To teach people to work with animals and develop the skills to make them employable (as opposed to just better informed about a particular topic or how to look after their own animals) training courses basically need to include practical, hands on experience, as in the level 5 course you did. It's a good start but I'm not aware of any distance/online learning courses that can provide the sort of additional training you seem to be looking for.

It depends where you are but you could start by researching what courses are available in colleges/training centres closer to you. Industry support may also be an option where you could learn on the job. Have a look at http://www.workinracing.ie for example. It also depends on the animal species you would like to work with but there are lots of options.

Alison at Elista Education in Laois runs brilliant courses, across a wide spectrum. She used to lecture at St Johns, she may well still do so.
