    Hello,
Looking at selling/ trading in my Golf Van for something a bit bigger, but don't want big mileage or box vans etc.
so something big enough for my stuff and maybe the odd bicycle in the back without taking it apart.
    this is my shortlist:
    Hyundai Tucson commercial
    Nissan Qashqai commercial
Seat Ateca (see one on carzone only)
    then slightly bigger
    Hyundai Santa Fe commerical
    Nissan X-Trail.
Problem with the bigger ones is the price starts to go up a lot , and as i use the commercial at weekends and sometimes private use, i have to pay the 5% BIK
so this on top of the finance starts getting expensive.
Would like to look second hand but not easy to get suv commercials and probably high mileage.
not sure about converting a second hand car version to a commercial, i think it has to be converted before first registration as a Van for BIK reasons.
so this limits what i can buy.

Mitsubishi Outlander. Not far over 30k and 4wd too.

Bit dated on the inside but has all the toys that you may not get in the others as commercial versions are usually base models.

Vet has an outlander seems happy enough with it, another has an L 200 with a canopy and another has the 4x4 skoda estate the name escapes me.

If you didn't need back seats a pick up type such as a hilux with a decent canopy in the non crew can form have a long enough bed in the back, may be cheaper than others to buy but perhaps not cheaper to run and possibly not as comfortable to sit in alltho I haven't been in anything less than 10 years old so seating positions may have improved

Sounds like you need an estate car.

Edited: yes they do xv crossover and Forrester. I will look at those too

currently ringing around trying to get insurance quotes for the above vans. Not easy, they seem to be loading them into a higher insurance bracket because there are very little of them registered in Ireland as commercial, especially the Seat Ateca,
my insurance would go from 680 euro to just under 1000 euro :O. same 1.6TDI engine ( less dieselgate) just slightly bigger and more expensive.

seems like the insurance company is using these type of car /vans to get more money out of me

I used to have a 2L petrol Forester and insurance/tax was the same as my previous 2L car.

I don't think the Ateca is an official SEAT conversion - probably a local dealer conversion, and while it has to be to the same standard as manufacturer conversions, it's a little trickier to find out info on dealer conversions as the info isn't published anywhere.

Outlander/Qashqai/X-Trail/Tucson/Sportage are all official Manufacturer Conversions.

Thanks ROR , thats what i thought, according to the Seat dealer i'm taking to, he has sold a few of the converted ateca's. i do like the look of them over the others on offer, and he is giving me a company PCP option, which is interesting.

regarding the insurance, they keep asking is it a car converted to a van or was it a van from the factory?, as far as im concerned im buying a van from a main seat dealer, but i think ill ask the dealer for a copy of the engineers report just to be on the safe side for future insurance renewal.

according to the dealer , the ateca is brought in unregistered, converted to commercial , then registered as commercial.

Have seen a few commercial versions of these in Dublin as the radio station Q102 has some.
I was going to say the Ssangyong Rexton to you but you seem to be happy buying the Seat and the Rexton is bigger as well as older but still great value.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Nothing finalise yet, but thinking about the seat more than the others, need to get trade-in prices on my golf first.
Thanks for rexton suggestion, they also do a smaller van the korando. But not for me to be honest. Thanks for the q102 reference, just checking them out on their website

Bik on a 40k commercial is 1000/annum out of your pocket presuming you're paying tax at higher rate.

    The capital allowance is 5k/annum.

The BiK is minimal all considered, a tenner/week difference out of the pocket between a 40k & a 20k vehicle. Paying for the thing is of course a different matter but the BIK is negligible IMO.

I'd go outlander too as ROR suggested, maybe a kuga. The alteca is 1.6 & 2WD presumably?

A few years insurance was underpriced if anything. A comparison between than and now isn't overly apt.

Also commercial insurance is different again.

Can't fathom why you are mentioning tax, 2.0 on the cc rates were all the same, we all know that.

Don't see the commerical Outlander on Subaru's website.
But maybe they do it unofficially like the ateca.

Regarding the atcea, it comes 1.6 2wd and 2.0 4wd

Outlander is a Mitsubishi, possibly why you don't see it on Subaru's website...

    Sorry, brain fart moment.

Had a look at the new Mazda cx5 today. Very nice and I can get it commercial also from the same garage as the Aleca. Now I'm stuck, I've no idea what to get

    DO NOT GET THE MAZDA!

    It will break.

It will take ages to fix.

    It will then break again.

No web links, just lots of real world experience of supplying them to drivers then having unhappy drivers ringing me to complain they are off the road again and Mazda are taking ages to fix them.

I recently moved company and it's the same here as it was in the last place.

Thanks for the heads up on the CX-5 ,btw it was the old CX-5 i test drove, i sat into the new model CX-5 and had a look around, it was just after coming in, so wasn't ready for drive, it looks nice inside and sharper lines outside and bigger "cargo" space in the back with the seats down than the Ateca.
i also drive the 150bhp awd Ateca while i was there, i found it harder on back roads than the CX-5, but very VW golf or probably Tiguan to drive. Bit disappointed with the rear cargo space, didn't seem much longer than my existing golf, maybe 100mm or so.
anyway, i will let ye know what i buy, but it may take a while!
just need to wait to see about finance etc.
    thanks for all your help

If the dealer is both Seat and Mazda, you aren't in Waterford by any chance are you? If so, they are the only Mazda dealer I've dealt with who know what to do when they break.

If you are down that direction then it's worth the journey to Simon Kavanagh Mitsubishi in Wexford to look at the Outlander - they know their commercials down there.

Dealer was TP Waters in Kildare. Im going to have a look at the outlander during the week. Personally i'm not gone on the styling, but i will take a look and a drive off that also.
