Getting connected in France

Mods if this has been posted before please remove.

We are heading to France on Monday for two weeks, the Dordogne area, we had planned on not bothering too much with internet usage, just whenever we came upon a wifi hotspot. However my partner has just found out he has work coming in the next week and needs to have internet access in order to get this work done.

Where we are staying is quite rural and there are no places nearby we could use. Is there any option of renting or buying a modem/something for the phone in order to be able to be connected. Im with three and he's with 1D if thats of any use. Not all that tech savvy so probably not using the correct terminology so sorry for that.

Any advice would be great thanks.

If you're going to be rural then you will first need to see what the local coverage is like. There may be good coverage for calls and txts but not data (3G/4G) so it's impossible to predict what solution you should go for.

If both of you have some kind of data plan for roaming then when at your rental you will be able to see on your phone display if there is a 3G or 4G signal on either phone and the name of the local network you're connected to. Pick the network with the best data signal, then go to the nearest big town and see if you can buy a data SIM (with a prepaid number of GB) for that network.

First, find out the code postale of the place you're staying, and type it in here: https://www.couverture-mobile.fr/

That'll bring up a list of all the operator's antennae in the area and give you an idea of who/what's available. Coverage can be somewhat paradoxical in France, in that some of the big names give a very poor service in rural areas, while the budget/newer companies give excellent coverage.

Every supermarket in France sells SIM cards; as long as your phone is unlocked, you should be good to go within 5mins of buying it. The market is very competitive at the moment, so you should be able to get a good deal, e.g. 100GB/mo @4G for 20€ with http://mobile.free.fr/ + 10€ to be assigned a number.

... but you might be just as well getting a roaming data package from Three or 1D if it's only for 2 weeks. None of my visitors have ever bought a local SIM card for that length of time. You only need one - you can tether the other for the odd time you need to up/download something.
