Pet dog killed by two other dogs

So a little back story, we've had this jack Russel terrier for close to 12 years and was mostly well behaved. Some run ins with some cats and a few scrapes with larger dogs over near our house. He always chased the cat at home but the cat was smart enough to climb up on walls. We have two areas in which we keep our dogs, our own backyard which has said jack Russell, golden retriever and a pomme cross. In the farm yard we have an old lab mix, a cat and separated again in another enclosure are another 2 lab mixes. Recently the jack Russell has been scraping at the gate trying to get out, he had made a good inroad in it so we reinforced it. To no avail as he escaped last night and I went up to the yard this morning and he was dead inside the enclosure with the two lab mixes. Without getting too graphic he was very very badly bitten and torn. I am very concerned about these two animals because we obviously have other pets and children in the family do occasionally visit. Can you please advise

The JR entered the enclosure of 2 other dogs who've always been kept separate. This is a natural reaction. The dogs won't be a problem but YOU need to make sure they never have the opportunity to do this again.
I would strongly suggest you integrate your pack so they don't feel threatened when another dog enters their enclosure.

What are the 2 Lab mixes normally like with other dogs? What sex are they? You have described your terrier as scrappy. I would say what happened is that he went in looking for trouble & the Labs fought back.

If another small dog came into my dogs area looking for trouble I can't honestly say that mine would not do the same. My dogs are great with kids & also other dogs. You do need to secure their dog run so that nothing else can get into them.

Absolutely horrible thing to happen though.

The two dogs are only separated during the day for fear they may run away. All the animals are integrated really well, very often they go for walks and runs around the fields.

As a person with a few dogs let's say. Mainly Hunting breeds may I add. And of coarse my children have a Maltese inside and our JR inside. Well I kow when they all go out together them JRs are mad to try fights if anything comes near them. I wonder is one of your lad mixes coming in heat. Which a JR will.cop on before any dog I feel. Sorry to hear how the dog died. Really am.

Thanks. Than i would call it a freak accident. The JRT might have offended them, they were without supervision and might have felt threatened. I don't foresee any future issues - just make sure their kennel/enclosure is not accessible when on their own - mind you it doesn't take much for a powerful lab cross to kill a small dogs and do a lot of damage. always always supervise with a pack of dogs
