So I bought a new BBQ today and stopped in my local garage to buy a cylinder of gas on the way home. Iv a propane regulator but it says on the cylinder its butane. the regulator fits the cylinder fine and when i take it off you can smell gas so it has defo broke the seal on the cylinder. but no gas appears to be getting to the bbq hence it wont light. is it a case that the pressure is wrong on the propane regulator or something?? so id either have to buy a butane regulator or return the cylinder for a propane one? or am i talking total crap altogether and just a thick?

As far as I know most, if not all, current gas bbq's run on propane not butane. Also, again as far as I know, a regulator for one should not fit on the cylinder for the other, so how you managed to get it to fit I don't know.

Return the cylinder and get a grey propane one, sometimes sold as "patio gas".

if i get a regulator for the butane cylinder will it not still work? not sure if returning it is an option as i took off the seal that was on the cylinder

A barbecue cylinder is grey - so if its an orange cylinder you've the wrong one.

You can buy BBQ's set for both Propane and Butane, and it wouldn't be unknown for the shop to give you the wrong regulator either.

So look up the documentation for your unit, you need to find out which one you have.

If you do have the wrong one, it is not certain if the gas will light. The gas:air mixture required for proper burning may be so different that it will not light at all. Also depends on the design of the burners, so don't assume the gas is not getting through.

  • Hi all,

I have same prob as original post.

I got a gas barbeque from Homestore and more. It says it can use either propane or butane, I have a large butane gas bottle

I've tried all the permutations of turning buttons and taking and and off the regulator.

I'm thinking that the gas isnt getting through to the barbeque itself.

I've spotted this advice on the web? (In Bold below) Does this mean that I should be disconnection the orange gas pipes and reconnecting them?

I'm pretty handy at things, but this has got me at a loss as to what to do next.

    Any advice appreciated.

    From the web:

First, check to make sure the tank isn’t empty. If there is a proper amount of fuel, the regulator bypass may have been triggered. A liquid propane tank has a safety feature built into the gas regulator on the tube connecting your tank to the grill. This safety valve will not open fully until the gas pressure has equalized between the tank and the grill. If the burners are in the on position, gas is leaving the lines in the grill and the pressure cannot equalize.

Completely shut the valve on the propane tank:

Make sure all the gas valves on the grill are in the off position by turning the knobs completely off
Disconnect the gas hose from both the propane tank and the grill
Reconnect the hose to the tank and grill

Slowly open the valve on the tank and perform a leak test with a spray bottle of soapy water at the connections. If there are no leaks, turn on the grill
This will equalize the pressure and reset the gas shut off valve on the tank.

Put up a pic of the regulator. My BBQ's regulator slips on to the gas cylinder and the regulator has a knob that you turn to turn on the gas.

I wait4me. Thanks for reply. I went into Homestore and More and they say its propane only. The manual says butane or propane, but I'm assuming butane can only be used if the regulator is changed.

My local garage only sell propane with an empty bottle, so my wait to see if it works continues. :)

The barbecue itself will work on either fuel, but is supplied with only one regulator, which on the majority of new units will be for propane.

If you have a civic amenity centre nearby, it's worth popping in as folk will often leave unwanted empty gas (propane or butane) cylinders there. Or ask around or on a local online group (Facebook etc) if anyone has an unwanted empty propane cylinder they'd be happy to part with.

Propane Heads can be a bit figity to fit.

1st thing is to make sure the head is on properly.

Looking at your photo you need to push in the switch as you fit it. This should so solid no shaking etc.

then turn on the switch, this essentially pushes a pin into the top of the cylinder to release the gas. You should Feel/Hear this.

    Then just light her up
