    Sacrilidge!

I had my tractor licence at 16, but couldn't drive my Opel Corsa on the same roads for another year. I know which I'd rather have a 16 year old crash into me in.

Who'll drive the silage outfits now :(

What happened the days when you could get your 12 year old son to go out and move the car?

The highest number of fatalities on our roads were among those aged 16-25 (45)

Has t be the worst country in the world regarding driving on the road. Every two years it's a new stupid rule. The problems on the road aren't young drivers. It's them wànkers in their BMW, Audi's, mercs and range rovers constantly on the phone. I know them new cars come with handsfree built int the radio and they've all also got indicators. Use them ffs. And relax on the speed a bit aswell. Nothing worse than an idiot in his Audi on the phone while doing 150km and not indicating when changing lanes.

Don't worry. When you grow up and find a proper job, apply yourself and focus on your career you too can have nice things. You don't have to be in that banger for the rest of your life.

A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away (Cavan) I was on the piss with a few friends, we had organised a taxi to collect is from a house and pick us up at the end of the night.
Sometime during the night, I noticed the taxi driver in the same pub as us, thought nothing of it.
When we got picked up, the taxi driver was in the passenger seat and his son, no more than 14, was driving all of us home.

Worst country in the world ? Christ that's a stupid post , there's plenty evidence out there about road safety and Ireland , we used to be one of the worst but we've upped our game recently and now have a fairly good record , and data proves that young people are more likely to die due to speeding and dangerous driving

    Or moped.
If anything, they should be reducing the age for the theory tests.
    Get good practice in early.
Make them sit a few over the years so it might seep in.

    How??

Well, from your analysis, that enables you to conclude it is the worst, which were the second and third worst, for example. Or did you check them all and come up with a comprehensive ranking system and list assessing all the countries of the world ? Are you confident your methodology was correct ?

I hate these posts that make sweeping generalizations.

The fact is that all 16 and 17 year olds are mostly boy racers and cause all the deaths on the roads.

That's the reason this measure is being brought in.

Boy racers are few and far between now. They can't get insured on modified cars anymore so that scene is near extinct. So I'm calling bs on that. And why is it just boys? Some Teenage girls should never ever be near a car. They're feckin lethal.

Some Teenage girls should never ever be near a car. They're feckin lethal.

We can change that to some people should never be near a car.

If they changed the age to apply for the theory test to match the introduction of the psc then that would be one thing but it is a paradox to have the rule that you can drive from 16 on but you can't get a license.

It is already prohibitive for anyone to drive due to the cost - €45 on theory test, €35 to get the provisional license (+ €30 for the eye test), €300+ to get the required lessons, €120 to take the test, full license €55. That is all before you buy a car or get insurance and tax. Perhaps this is the governments sly way of forcing us to become carless so they can say that we are carless to europe.

Well having a nice car doesn't mean you've to turn into the biggest pr?ck on the road either.

I see pr?cks on the road of all ages, sexes and in different car types all the time in every part of the country. There is no tolerance or patience on the roads anymore.

The biggest problem though is the lack of enforcement of the rules of the road. Simples. We cannot blame lack of education.

The AA says running a car in Ireland costs an average of €11,000 a year. How are 16-year-olds going to earn that?

And by the same token, if you got a bike instead and saved all your €11,000s for 10 years you'd be able to buy a basic home. Plus not being fat.

It doesn't. The card is issued when you are given a PPS number which you can apply for once you've a reason to need one. I got mine when I started work at 15. You need a PPS number to apply the theory test anyway.

    OP, get a job.

Personally - and this is a purely personal opinion - I think that what Americans call "Driver Ed" should be part of the second level curriculum, and should include theory (teach them to indicate in time! teach them how lethal it is to hold a phone while driving!) and practice, and cover road use for pedestrians and for riding a bike, and road use for driving, before getting on to practical driving skills.

If it were equivalent to the Advanced Driving courses available to adults, all the better.

It would be well worth building a driving course in each county that could be used by every school for these lessons.

This would have the same beneficial effect on the next generation of drivers that the NCT has had on the last few generations of cars.

They're too busy teaching them religion in school ........ you know, something tangible, real life, practical; something that will save their souls when they die ............ after they crash the car because of their lack of driving knowledge/experience.

I actually think we should be raising the age you can get a license to 21, and the age you can drink to about 23 aswell.

Kids don't mature as fast these days with their Snapchat, Facebook, living at home until they are 30, and getting offended by everything. I just don't think they are mature enough at 18 like an 18 year old was in the past.

We often forget that it was young men and women who found this country. Their equivalents today are just dicking around staring at their phones unfortunately. Hate being cynical, but they are just not mature enough as a group. Driving license age should go up to 21, along with drinking age to 23.
