My local chipper is providing fish and chips for 6euro which appears it may not be half price

Mine do half price on the day. Queues do be out the door. Grill doesn't get fired up at all. Not a burger in sight.

Same old questions will come up again, some places will do half price food besides fish & chips, some/majority won't. All ITICA chippers on the list should be doing it, but other chippers not on that list will also take part if they wish.

you can check previous years threads for info on your local one. Many chippers have facebook pages and I saw 2 local ones talk about it.

I wish they would do that all the time.

Or as i like to call it "National Avoid your local chipper2" day. the queues for this are usually ridiculous.

My local chipper do fish & chips for €5 every Wednesday and surprisingly it's a really decent sized portion. so I'd imagine they'll be same price next Wednesday. Don't think they're part of that itica though. There's only two days of the year you'd be guaranteed not to see me in the chipper, one is Christmas and the other is national fish & chip day.

Same here, the size of chip portions from Italian chippies are just insane when you pour the bag out on a plate and see how much youre actually eating. Some chippies do half bags of chips alright but still want to charge 75% of the cost of a full bag !

Anyway I will still be partaking. The trick to beat the queue on fish and chips day is to ring your order in for collection. If you time it right it saves you having to queue :D

My local chipper did a special on Wednesdays you got a fresh cod, a chip and a drink for 7.30, on fish and chip day they didn't do that offer, though their individual prices (ie €2.80 for a bag of chips and €4.50) for a fresh fish were half the price they'd usually be so the 2 combined was still €3.60... Smart eh?

The one I went to last year now dished us out 2 fish and chip for a fiver, pretty sure it was Pollock but you get what you pay for and it was still tasty

2 yrs ago - bought 2 fish n chip in Cozy Artane at 1/2 price- for myself & daughter. Abs. Crap - probably colley instead of cod - dried up & tasteless - never again. Daughter never went to a chipper again.
What we were given was Disguishing & Disgraceful.
Shame on them - The Mafia.

Abs true - I am conscious of my weight & only want a 1/2 bag of chips - And as U say charged 3/4rds price of full bag.
Yrs ago we could buy a small or a 'largea' single.

Just because you get half the product doesn't mean the retailer's costs are halved. The spuds to go into the chips would probably be the cheapest part of the product. Staff costs and overheads are all the same for both sized bags.

Is it not a great thing that your daughter is turned off chippers? They wouldn't exactly be the healthiest. Lots of people would love to not get cravings for them!

Nope. No ITICA members out there. However, many general chippers latch on and do it. Burdocks, for example.

Checked Facebook there. Giovanni's in Oranmore are doing some sort of offer, doesn't say what and Jack Jordan's are reducing their meal from €9.90 to €7.90

The marketing is lost on you!

Supposed to encourage you to buy more throughout the year not just on the one day :):)

Are you kidding me did you see the queues that are in chippers. Every year I go in. Imagine if you had to queue like that every week :pac::pac:

Ordered from Macaris in Finglas, waited 2 hours and then when I rang up to complain it hadn't come, they said I was barred for being rude on the phone, I'd never ordered from them before, I hate National Fish and Chips day, a holiday it is not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

I'm surprised that any of them do deliveries or take advance orders of the half price stuff, no wonder some queues are so long if they are cooking stuff for others not even there.

Were burdocks doing it yesterday? no mention of it on their facebook or twitter page.

The number of chippers in the ITICA has dropped a lot, you can see old lists online, a few I go to are no longer on the list and were not doing anything or just had reductions but not half price. Many of their lunch deals or "non peak day" deals would have been better.

Did you seriously think they would deliver half price fish/chips in preference to those who took the time to queue?

Went to the ITHCA chipper on the Rathbeale Road in Swords last night, very nice people, super 1 and 1 for half price, €5, which meant I throughly enjoyed National Fish and Chip Day, so did the kids, Had never been to this chipper before, but would highly recommend, lovely Fresh Cod and Chips cooked fresh to order!

the Q at the local chipper was far smaller this year, last year it would have been 100 people deep, last night it was more like 20

Id say people have given up bothering to turn up after the queues other years

Well yes, especially if they confirm the order, why confirm an order if they weren't going to fulfill it. Also, the fact they said I was rude to them on the phone previously when I hadn't ordered from before, and them calling me a liar on the phone, you know...
