Laptop automatic updates

This morning i used my laptop for about 10 minutes for basic browsing, using my mobile data. It was only browsing fb/boards pages - nothing data-heavy.

My mobile data usage in that 10 minutes jumped almost 2GB (I had checked it before tethering) and it switched itself off as I'd reached my 5GB limit (according to the phone).

I checked with VF - they only have my usage up till yesterday showing (~3GB which is what i saw this morning when i logged on) - and they say the only thing they can think of that would chew that amount of data would be the laptop automatically installing a big update once it was online.

It's a new laptop with Windows 10 which I'm using for the first time so not at all familiar with it.

Is there any way of controlling when the laptop will install updates? My previous one with W7 used to look for me to shut down to install them, so i always knew when they were pending. I'm afraid to turn this one back on now until I'm back on wifi!!!

(It's a Toshiba Satellite if that makes any difference)

If the laptop asks for you to shut down to install, then they're already downloaded so it's too late by then.

You used to be able to make updates manual. Not sure how it looks in Windows 10. Just search for Windows Update after pressing the Windows key.

I'll have a look when I get back home to wifi.

I've used the phone to run the laptop loads, both the old W7 one and this W10 one since i got it a few weeks ago, and never has data been used like that! Need to figure out wtf happened or I'll be afraid to ever tether again!!!

I'm back on wifi, and have had a bit of a poke around.

I can't see any way to limit updates to a time of day....or to when I'm on wifi (I presume the laptop can't discriminate between my mobile hotspot and home wifi).

I've also had a look at the update history, and the last update shown is 23/5/17 - so it can't have been that that spiked my data usage this morning.

Vodafone website is still showing me at about 2.6GB used so far (which is what I would expect) but the phone is saying I've gone over my 5GB limit by 216MB (and counting).

So maybe the phone data counter just had a bit of a fit, and decided I'd used all that data in a ten minute period....

I've purchased an extra GB of data from Vodafone as I thought I was out.... that's a wasted 8 quid anyhow by the looks of it :mad:

If anyone can guess at why the phone would suddenly decide I'd used all my data, I'd be very interested to hear any theories!

Anyway, apart from the wasted euros, it seems no harm done. Lesson learned (I think!)
