i have been asked to make a sign for a local charity to put outside their shop.
I cant really charge so I want to stay away from pvc foam and proper sign materials because that will break the budget.

I am thinking about using marine ply as the back board and letters with a spacer in between

if I use marine ply and paint it a few times .
how long do you think it will last.
is there any other material I'm forgetting about.

Good Marine ply should last indefinitely, if it's maintained and the sign is well flashed to prevent water getting down the back of it , I did some repairs on a sign a while ago and the water had got in where two sheets were joined , if you could seal the edges before you fit it it would help.

I was planning to put the sign out an inch or two from the wall and wrapping the edge in timber

If you give the ply 2-3 coats of epoxy resin putting a bit extra along the cut edges then paint or varnish, it should last a lifetime. You might also get away with birch ply if it's encapsulated in epoxy.

Medite Tricoya MDF would be another option, supposed to last 50 years
