I've the NCT this week - my boot opening mechnism works, but only when you use the button either inside the drivers door or on the keyfob - not on the boot itself. I understand that they need to look inside the boot to check various stuff - am i right in thinking though that it isn't strictly speaking a requirement for the boot button on the boot to work, and thus if I tell them to use one of the alternatives that they can't fail me for it?

The bodywork check includes an examination of the boot. Where this cannot be opened or contains items which would make the examination difficult, the bodywork check is considered to have not been
completed and the vehicle cannot be passed.

Tbh, I'd expect them to fail you for this.
It's just a visual retest anyway.

But the boot can be opened, just not via the boot button, nothing requires the boot to be opened via a specific way.

I'd leave a Post It Note on the steering wheel informing how to open the boot.

They will expect normal operation, not workarounds.
But yeah, maybe a post-it will be enough and they'll be lenient.

    See my previous comment.

OP, we will just have to wait for the nct to actually pass or fail your car, so do come back and update us.

Thanks guys - similar view to myself in that if they are lazy they'll fail me on this, but that there's nothing in the manual which says the button on the boot needs to work, rather just that the boot itself needs to be able to be opened.

What car is it... it's a safety feature on some cars and can be disabled...

    It shouldn't fail for that.

Once you can open it for them it'll pass.
