Ok the thread title may seem a little dramatic, but right now, that's how I feel!

I'm in a crappy mood and want somewhere to moan about all the crappy things that come with being a woman. Don't get me wrong, I love being a woman too, but every now and again it just sucks!

Maybe it's because I am currently (and have been for most of the day) in bed half crippled with period cramps, which is in my lower back and shooting down into my bum and legs, even after taking painkillers.

I've spent the past week with unbelievable cravings that nothing seems to satisfy, or fill me up, no matter how big the serving. Stomach is like a bottomless pit!
PMS is terrible, I get really moody and irritable.

    I feel fat and miserable.....and hungry! :p

Anyone else have anything to share?

Sexual harassment. Online ..on forums in public in previous jobs on the bus on the street. Being groped /grabbed in night clubs.

It doesn't happen every day ...but when it happens it sucks. :(

Unfair treatment as a woman. Not being a part of the boys club.

Oh I feel you. I also have a bottomless pit around my period!! No amount of anything fills me. Oddly enough its worse the first day, when it arrives I get severe pain for about 3-4 hours, like yourself stabbing pains in my back bum and legs. I also need to be close to a toilet but no amount of pain killers help me. Cannot concentrate or get comfortable sitting, standing or walking which makes work difficult. After a few hours its gone and I'm grand no pain or anything for the rest of it.

I get seriously irritable and emotional for a few days before and can honestly say I feel sick at the thoughts of it arrives.

There is no shame in admitting it :)

I get bad pain for the first 24 hrs...then the last 24 hrs diff pain...it's like my womb is shrinking back..does that make sense?

    General illness and fatigue. :o

I used to throw up in the early stages of my period, it was so bad. I've been on the pill though for years, and period pains are long a thing of the past. They just got less and less over the years, thankfully!

My gynecologist said that is quite common...throwing up...on the first day. You poor thing :(

I'm on the pill too but I still get very sick. I might have to look at changing. I often vomit etc and it ain't pretty.

I would have to go to bed and throw up or sleep the rest of the day away. It was horrible. I used to wonder how I could work with this kind of impact.

Thankfully, the pill made all that better nearly straight away. And over the years, my periods have gotten lighter and lighter, to the point where they're barely noticeable. So thank God for that.

My periods were also horrific before I went on the pill. I'd be doubled over in pain. All over my body. Was horrible! And they used be extremely heavy and would last for days.

So glad I went on the pill. I wonder would my periods still be as bad if I go off it...maybe it was just a teenage thing. Don't wanna find out!

I used have the most regular periods. 10 am on a Tuesday every 4 weeks. Two nurofen on day 1 to 2 I'd be grand. Cried every time beforehand. Even my boss got to figure when due.

Now I'm a little older and very irregular. Given that my nana and my Mam went through menopause at 40 I'm not liking it! My skin is drier, I haven't had the heat on all year, I gaze at my lovely louboutin shoes but put on my m and s ones.

My best friend and myself both went demented recently. She found a hair on her toe and me under my chin

It's sunny now, so this morning I needed to shave my legs again. Shaving legs is the most time consuming pointless thing ever. Grr. Especially annoying coz I'm practically blind and don't wear contacts so 70% of the time I cut myself. One of the annoying things about being a woman. +1 on the cramps too.

I'm blind without my glasses, so I know how you feel! Such a hassle trying to keep everything hair free!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 610 ✭✭✭Cutie 3.14

Shaving: Yes! Hair removal in general, I'm so sick of it!
My hair grows back so fast, I'd love to be able to afford laser treatment but at the moment it's a no go so it's good old fashioned shaving/waxing. Never ending cycle!

Period: I used to throw up too when I was on my period as a teenager, it was awful, I'd get so pale and weak with the pain that even my lips would turn white!
Unfortunately it's not getting better as I get older, still as painful and heavy as ever, I'm nearly 30 now.
I've been on the pill on/off over the years and while it made it somewhat lighter, it never did anything for the pain.

Birth Control: I am considering my options for birth control and they just all seem to be....risky! I don't want to get fitted for an IUD and end up with worse periods than I have already, or experience uncontrollable weight gain/mood swings, (more than usual) same with the implant, what's going to happen, why can't it all be straightforward!

I also second the bra statement above :D

Forgive me if this sounds silly, (and I am sympathetic to your plight,) but...if you hate shaving, why do it?

I imagine for many different reasons? I shave for aesthetic reasons in summer as I like wearing dresses and skirts. Bad enough having my pasty legs out without them being hairy too. I don't bother shaving in winter, only on a rare occasion. Underarms I shave for comfort every day or every other day all year round but that only takes 2 seconds and I'm short sighted enough that I can see my underarms clearly to shave, it's just the legs that take forever.

I just thought of another one too, and this is a bit ranty but it appears to be a common occurrence for me right now at my age. I don't understand why people treat getting engaged or pregnant as the most important things you can do. Now, not taking away from the person in those scenarios but a friend of mine was headhunted for an amazing job a while back. The dream job for her, especially as she had retrained. She was over the moon. She said she got a pattering of congrats from our friend group. Whereas when she got engaged recently, people crawled out of the woodwork all over to congratulate her. She said she felt like her professional achievements weren't regarded by the majority as important at all, it all came down to her "planning a day out". Like I said, a bit ranty perhaps but I don't think men get the same overreaction to these events as women do. /end rant

I shave under my arms because it feels cleaner. I shave my legs because society. Plus I do love the feel of fresh shaved legs on fresh sheets. But it's a PITA keeping on top of it sometimes.

And maha - I totally get your frustrations!!!

I used to vomit and faint for the first few years of my period. I used to have to take the day off school when I'd get it and it would be my worst nightmare to be caught short and get it when I wasn't expecting. Mine were so bad and interfering with my life so bad that my mam put me on the pill at 16. I was on it for 8 years and was literally dreading coming off it because of the horror my life had been previous to that. Not on any pill now and maybe it's due to being older but I've literally zero pains now. Nothing. What I do get though is ovulation pain. Really annoying cramping and back pain mid cycle- but nothing compared to how my period pain was in my early teens.

Ohhh this!! Neighbour of mine just got a great job, she is in a lovely apartment, travels to exotic places , living the life. Was speaking to her dad and said something along the lines of "she is doing so well, you must be so proud of her" and he says "hmm but she just can't get a man".

It wasn't said out of malice, more concern, but like the woman is living the life!!! She is financially independent so it's not like she needs a second income to support her or whatever, she has a great social life, every time I meet her she is beaming, I genuinely don't think finding a man is even a priority for her, yet he seemed to think she didn't "have it all" because she "couldn't get" a man.

Likewise, I'm saving for a mortgage at the moment and the amount of people who say "ah sure you'll meet a man any day and you'll combine finances for that". Like yeah they have a point, I may be lucky and meet someone who I want to buy with and it'd make things a lot easier. But I'm not going to wait around for that to happen. I don't know if men are told the same thing- "you'll find a nice woman who won't mind coughing up her savings to share them with you".

My periods used to trigger migraines for me. That would mean being in agony with a headache, feeling sick and throwing up anything I had in me, and then some. The only upside was that they only ever lasted 1 day.
I have since gone on a pill which stops my periods altogether, and I'm absolutely loving it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭Teyla Emmagan

The pill is life changing. BEST THING EVER!!!!

Haven't had a period in about 3 years. No more pain, no more diarrhea, no more breaking back, no more insane anger, no more agonising boobs, no more ruined sheets. Whoever discovered it should be beatified.

So you're 48. How do you even know if you're still fertile (genuine question)?. Would it not be time now to give it up for a while and see what happens? Are the odds not pretty good that you're menopausal/pre menopausal at this stage but that the pill hormones are just blanking it? It might be time to go back to your Well Woman centre or whatever. Because at this stage maybe you need to be on something else.

And I'm not trying to be smart/nasty.

If the what happens is an unwanted pregnancy she's kinda fcuked isn't she? Big risk to take even at 48.

The pill helps my period symptoms massively but it makes me almost psychotic. I've tried several of them over the years, same every time. Murderous rage, crying jags, suicidal ideation, and also a near total lack of libido. Mam and sister are the same. I went back on it a couple of years ago because my periods had gotten very very bad, didn't last long. Fcuk that, I prefer the physical pain.

I can't take the pill. Doesn't agree with me at all. I took depro provera for a couple of years and i was never able to conceive after it.

My periods were so bad that I blacked out from the pain. I get a severe ovulation pain, migraine and nausea. I also get PMT. I had a hysteroscopy and D&C a few months ago because I had endometriosis and had a mirena coil inserted. I was so so so sick after surgery and the pain was so horrendous I couldn't walk. But.... The periods are much lighter now and the pain is totally bearable but I still get the ovulation pain, migraine, nausea and PMT. And I have a very irregular cycle with a max gap of 3 weeks.

I've had a walk in the park compared to my sister and mam :(

Sooo. Yep. Being a woman sucks sometimes!

I had an ok time on Mercilon but everything else has absolutely gone to hell after a while. Had to come off Cerazette a few months ago because it was putting me into a deep depression. After we complete our family the copper coil seems like a reasonable option - I'd prefer to avoid hormones if possible.

I was on three different pills until I found one that suited me. All the others turned my a bit crazy and/or made me bleed all month (yay!).

Was about to give up on them and then my doctor got my to try Logynon. It's low dose and triphasic. It contains three different doses of hormones that change every 7 or so days. So it's suppose to mimic a natural cycle or something.. anyway it works for me and been on it now for years. Don't think it's that common though.

Pills never suited me or any of the women in my family either. Sure twas great getting my period like clockwork and little or no pain but the mood swings. Dear sweet jebus.

I remember at one stage starting to pull my eyebrows and lashes out on one of the pills I've tried.

That being said I'm waiting over a week for flow to show up. The stupid biatch never keeps her appointments. All of the pms and pains just wish they'd start so I could get some relief.

    #crazy.

Don't even get me started on hair removal. If the hair on my head grew as fast I'd be delighted.

    God I needed that rant.

My doctor advised me to come off the pill when I turned 35. He said it can increase the risk of breast cancer. I was dreading coming off it as my periods had been a nightmare before that. They haven't been bad though.

It also increases the risk of babies. But it reduces the risk of ovarian cancer, by a greater degree. And for longer. If you come off the combined pill, the risk decreases again. Screening is good for breast and cervical cancer, so it's a calculated risk.

Adding to this rant- boobs!!! In the last two months I've suddenly started get sore, heavy boobs before my period, what fresh hell is this?

Also, in general boobs are a pain. Good bras are bloody expensive and you often need different styles to go with different outfits, breast cancer rates in Ireland are very high and if you're any bit top heavy it's difficult to get dresses that fit correctly all over. Eventually boobs will sag and then when you get old enough you need to get them squished by a machine every few years to make sure they're not going to kill you.

    .

Same with mine! Mine are quite small/average and then just before my period- bam! Boobs! But they are so tender and heavy. They look amazing :o but I'm so uncomfortable, and generally bloated elsewhere too and it also reminds me about my impending period which is not fun! Never happened me before though, only the last few months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,039 ✭✭✭✭retro:electro

Pms bloat. I've started to get pms pain lately and it's very irritating. I get a dull ache either side of my groin, like a stitch. It then rotates back and forth to my back and it's very annoying. This coupled with the fact that I'd eat half of Tesco's stock of Haribo jellies and I'm a bloated mess. As soon as I get my period the bloating is gone and my stomach is totally flat!
At one point my doctor thought I may have ovarian cysts as the pain was so severe but no, I'm just one of the unlucky ones who experience ovulation pain.
