Far Cry 5

Yeah I hated far cry 4 so was weary of this the whole time but anything I've seen just sounds like a fun game. My biggest concern was doing enough resistance stuff to get a lieutenant out, that was still grindy in Mafia 3 but haven't read one had thing about this system yet.

I have never got a game early from smyths...have it pre ordered but I just pick it up the minute they open. I aint expecting much from the game but if it fills a gap until god of war comes out. I will just play it on hard and piss around in co-op so happy days.

Just as long as its better then Ghost Recon I be happy out.

Jesus ****ing christ. Game has only white people in an accurate representation of 15th centuary Bohemia, and it's disgraceful that there are only white people. Have a mix of races in this, and it's careful sanitising of the issue.

They really do some ****ty reviews.

Think 'll buy this digitally when I go home. Been saying I'd wait until it comes down in price but I'm just going to buy it when drinking anyway, may as well pull the trigger. I'll pre-order GOW while I'm at it.

Strange criticism, while there have been white supremacist Christian cults, there have also been cults that didn't give a **** about race. What Ubisoft done here is perfectly reasonable from what i have seen so far.

Also, you will find some people who aren't white, will aid and abet White supremacists e.g. the Nation of Islam was pretty friendly with the KKK, as they both had the same end goal of ethno states. There are even some examples in the Trump admin, and elsewhere.

Read a random comment online that sounded serious, saying they were disappointed that ubi is avoiding issues from what they read in Eurogamer. I think we just live in an age where the cool thing to do is hate or moan about things and be offended by everything. That part of EG posted above is absolutely ridiculous. I stopped following their pages since their ME Andromeda coverage. Their Kingdom Come review was awful ****e as well. I don't like the term snowflake, moany bastards suit these people better.

I'd thank that twice if I could, right on the button. My wish is that these kind of people would **** off out of gaming as a hobby, and maybe find one of the countless movies or tv shows that will cater to their need for social/political issues to be addressed. Games are supposed to be fun - I don't play games for commentary on the real world, I play them to get away from the real world.

Depends what it was about 4 you disliked. The two things I hated about Far Cry 4 were:

a. Taking over outposts, (basically the whole point of the game) - still there is 5.
b. Aimless open world - still there in 5. Some people love heading out there and getting lost, arsing about. I call that a waste of my time. Give me a purpose to be out there arsing about.

Half the joy of Far Cry is going out and getting lost/distracted in the world. If you want a purpose or streamlined game, then open world titles probably aren't for you.

I loved talking over outposts in FC 3, felt like a badass ninja with a bow. I think with 4, i didn't like 1 character and felt annoyed being sent on stupid quests. I got burnt out half way through and have up. It just felt like a lot of filler. Even though it was more of the same as FC 3, those games are night and day for me enjoyment wise.

As for the open world, I really like what I read on one review where there is no mini map and you have to discover points of interest either by stumbling into an area, talking to people, finding maps in game, magazines for fishing spots and road signs for . Wandering around, he found a guy being held at gunpoint. After saving him, he told of a local farm being taken over by a cult, cleared it out finding info about local fishing spots and a saved farmer told them about something else going on. He did it all felt very organic instead of multiple did appearing on your map that you are mindlessly checking off.

Anyone who has followed the development of the game will know that Ubisoft put a huge amount of time, effort and money into highlighting the setting and story so it stands to reason a good review would comment on whether their treatment of the subject was successful or not. The reviewer at EG seems to think they've missed the mark as described in the paragraph which Kiith quoted without the necessary context.

Where the game does try to take you through the mechanics by which people become fanatics, it does so at the level of cheap sensation, via devices such as mass hypnosis or mind-altering drugs that can be easily translated into the brutal lingo of an action game. There's little sustained investigation of wider social factors, like the overlap between militant Christian extremism and white supremacy or sexism - indeed, the game generally ducks such questions. The cult's ranks are stocked with a mixture of races and genders, in what feels like a careful sanitising of the subject matter.

Personally speaking, that's the most I'd expect from a Far Cry game so I'm not particularly bothered and from reading the rest of the review it still seems like a solid 7/10 game with "just enough going on here to keep a returning fan involved". Their summation in the last paragraph, however, seems to echo the opinions of a lot of folk both on these forums and elsewhere online with regard to the general Ubisoft open world formula (pre-AC:Origins at least) and how it has become somewhat stale, regardless of the setting.

What initially turned me off 4 was the animals, you couldn't walk 5 paces without being attacked by some psychotic badger. Think they toned it down a bit as when I came back it didn't seem as bad, it just got dull after a while. I think you unlock everything really early so there's no sense of progression which doesn't help.

A game that's all about blowing **** up and feeling like a bad ass while doing it doesn't want to bore it's player to death by making statements on "white supremacy" or "sexism". Yeah...I don't think I can play it if those aren't addressed in it :rolleyes:

Needless to say, Far Cry 5 is a new, massive, and even prettier and more polished version of the established formula with the big bonus of a mode which adds endless possibility. It’s extremely fun, wild, and oftentimes weird.

Are people genuinely giving out about reviews focusing on or addressing the political side of the game? I mean, even the bloody cover art is designed to be politicially provocative. It’s a game that’s actively inviting and anticipating these sort of critiques. It’s one thing if a review addresses a political point badly or cack-handedly - e.g. the Kingdom Come review - but these things are fair game, and as far as I’m concerned a hell of a lot more interesting than bland, cookie-cutter ‘mechanics / graphics / soundtrack / longevity’ box-ticking type reviews.

Far Cry games are predictable and derivative in terms of design, and they have been for several games now (ah, for the ambition of FC2 again). Nothing I’ve seen suggests this departs radically from that. The setting and real-world context it embraces is the most interesting part of the game by far (although personally I’m not expecting it to say anything interesting about the subject matter), and I’d consider it a borderline dereliction of critical duty if a reviewer just pushed it off to the side. Mainstream gaming criticism is long overdue growing the **** up, and games like this are perfect opportunities to do so.
