I have had a few of these in my time. Lately noticed that the trend is to give you minimum sedation so you are fully awake during the procedure, and they ask you to turn onto right side / left side , etc. So have you had one recently, were you in any discomfort, were you fully awake, any problems afterwards?

Had one done in October in the Bons in Dublin. I got sedation and don't remember a thing about it. I was in quite a bit of discomfort for a few days afterwards because of the carbon dioxide they use to inflate the colon - terrible cramps. Otherwise, it was fine!

I had one done recently. I had sedation but was wide awake for the procedure. I felt absolutely no discomfort either during or after the procedure. The worst part for me was the fasting for two days! Hope that helps :)

Get endoscope/colonoscopy combos in or around every 18 months.
Sedation is definitely better for endoscopes than colonoscopies
The minimal sedation for endoscopes mean recovery room is a lot quicker
Yes- I remember most of it- and yes, the gas (CO2) is incredibly painful (obviously this depends on the person). All-in-all, I think the minimum sedation approach works better (for me anyway).

I normally end up needing a Cat CT of the abdomen as well as the colonoscopy (I've strictures and blockages that they just can't monitor with the scope).

    Whats the difference between a endoscopy/colonoscopy ?

An endoscopy is a camera scope examination (in this context- of the GI tract, but it can include other internal organs- typically the liver or the pancreas). In the context of a gastro-intestinal endoscopy- it can be upper or lower- and can include the colon and other areas of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. A Colonoscopy- is very similar to an endoscopy, however it is specific to the rectum and colon- and does not include the rest of GI tract.

Had a few with the last one in Blackrock Clinic being awake.. "will only be a minute or two.." ten mins later and heli is still watching his colon on the TV

No pain, a little uncomfortable due to the gas but otherwise all was well.

Have had 4 done to date and 3 endoscopes.

First two I remember quite a bit, particularly the gas being pumped in and the biopsies being taken.

The others were done in a different hospital and I was completely knocked out. Which was fantastic.

Worst part of them though is still the prep. ,,**shivers**

Had one done at the end of September last year in Blanchardstown.
Was given sedation and told to ask for more if i felt uncomfortable but I dont remember a thing from it. I was given the sedation and the next thing I remember was being in the recovery room. No discomfort during or afterwards.

The prep was easy to drink but the effects that it induced were very unpleasant and that combined with the fasting had me very dehydrated and feeling unwell going to the hospital for the colonoscopy.

Had 2 , one sedated the other awake and needed pain killers afterwards.
First one sedated fully, fine. Second was agonising and my roaring had little effect. Due another soon, and the preparation needs to start THREE days earlier which is a change. Also only pap food. I don't understand why it has changed. Might it be that I need a second opinion on my last one? It is worrying because of all the recent scandals.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

Had one in Beaumont. Received sedation and was relaxed but fully alert, think it wore off during the exam too as I was in a lot of pain from the gas and wincing and the nurse said will I give more sedation and the doctor said no...

Worst part is the prep though!

Had one on Monday under full General Anaesthetic. Have had some cramps since but nothing I can’t handle. I’ve a bit of discomfort if I sit for a long period which I imagine is just from the scope going in.
Worst part for sure was the prep. Drinking it was unpleasant but manageable. What followed wasn’t what I was expecting, nothing for 2 hours then pure liquid at least 10 times with no solids whatsoever.

Hate to be ‘that guy’, but you spelled farting wrong.

Had one relatively recently under local anaesthetic (gas). Some discomfort during the procedure (hardly surprising) but nothing that noteworthy after if I'm honest.

I agree with the prep being the worst part though. I was told to mix the "clean prep" with Mi Wadi which made it a bit more palatable. I can guarantee there was definitely nothing left up there afterwards ;)

I had sedation but it never works for me, next time i wont bother, because they make you hang around even though i was wide awake and chatting. Pre meds for surgery dont work on me either.
I have a bit of a gag reflex, but it was over in a minute, found the lower end really interesting watching the tube going around, you can chat away to staff.the

For me the worst part was that vile crap you have to drink, turned out i got a double dose by accident, its rather an usual feeling liquid out of your bum.

I put them off for ages and honestly they were fine, had mine in bons in dublin

Had one under General anaestethic about a month ago. Felt nothing at all only a slight bit of soreness where biopsies were taken. Bowels were a bit loose for a few days but other than that the prep was by far the worst part.
Could have gone to work the next day if I wanted.
