WARNING - Category D (Insurance write off) - VW Golf 1.6TDI Match Edition.
    Vehicle Reg: SK61EFZ.
    Location Enniskillen.
    Miles: 61,000

I ran a full CarTell.ie car check on this car and it came up as having Category D damage. The owner lied about the damage and refused to pay back deposit.

Add is for sale on done deal: /cars-for-sale/2011-vw-golf-1-6tdi-match-only-60000-miles-grey/15336027

This is also a Cat D car and the mileage is 400 miles less now than it was when it was MOT'd in September 2016.

    Former UK reg is YH60EGZ

I'd say there is probably a decent percentage of UK imports that are Cat D being sold here by supermarket wheeler dealers and backstreet garages masquerading as private sellers to avoid appearing on Revenue's radar. They are substantially cheaper to buy in the UK at auctions and the likes meaning there is more profit in them over here by chancers. Personally I wouldn't buy from these sources but people who are willing to do so need need to have their eyes wide open and do proper background checks on the cars.

Very bad form by the seller but as said a lot of UK imports being sold on are Cat D. But if you can verify the damage that caused it to be a CatD it can be a good bargaining chip.

Cat D is the lowest form of write off and I've seen a few Cat D's that were written off for damage to bumper etc.. in fact I had a Civic type R a few years back that was Cat D that was written off because it's headlights were smashed in by some vandal and the front bumper cracked, but I bought it like that and got it a good few quid cheaper and ended up saving a fortune.

Unfortunately the VRT crowd don't care if it's worth less because of write off ☹️

How many Irish cars are sold with no formal classification that are far worse than a Cat D and nobody thinks twice about it.

How did you pay the deposit?, Cash? Bank Draft? Paypal?

Your mistake was doing a full cartell check AFTER paying a deposit.

And I seen a Merc that was Cat D that needed a full front end and the chassis was bent
