What would be the going rate for Communion money these days for a family member, taking into account attending an afters with meal etc. too?

    €100 or you're a bad relative.

Which is frankly nuts, but true.

Communion has nonsense written all over it. Kids making a few grand is the least of it

Nothing. Charities dirtied their bibs the last few years. Cynicism says it's going to pay the CEO's nail care bill.

Are sit down meals common for Communion Days outside the immediate family?

I went to my friend's son's Communion last year and the party at her house afterwards and gave him €20. Plenty of money for an eight year old!

Come back kneemos, all is forgiven.Clean sheet!
€20 is adequate op. It's all relative though, are you the godparent of the child? Are you a broke student? Have you got a big/small family?
I received almost £500 punts for my communion, and that was in 1987.Large extended family, close knit neighbourhood. All in pound notes, fivers and tenners.Me ma and da got the best part of that obviously, that was a nice wedge 30 years ago.My aunt, who's also my godmother was able to open an account with a building society for me with 20 punts as a startup. That was the best present I ever got as I own my property and have a shared concern in two others, despite having spent my adult life self employed, unemployed or 'offside'. I give my own nephews and nieces prize bonds instead of cash.

What about if you invited to a meal/ lunch after the ceremony???? What should you give then??? Should you cover the cost of the meal (say €25) and €25 for the child. So.... a husband and wife give 25+25+25= €75 all in???

Is this a joke? Ain't no neighbours getting communion money from me. My nephew got 20 and was lucky at that!

Donate to St Vincent de Paul or some other local charity of your choice and 20€ for the child is more than enough.
The vulgar ostentatious €50 notes of the Celtic Tiger is tasteless and very over.

I still can recall my amazement at my Confirmation at all the envelopes flying around outside the church afterwards. My family was much more conservative in that regard. My granny and aunts and uncles gave me something and that was it (and I don't have a large extended family). My Confirmation was 1995 and if I recall, I was getting tenners in cards, so I guess that would be twenty now. I can only assume it was tenners too for my Communion in 1991.

I just think anything more than twenty is too much for a kiddo! I mentioned my going to the communion of my friend's son above. I brought a card and also brought one along for him from my sister and mother. Each of us gave him €20. That may have been a bit excessive in total. But my friend is a very hard-working single mother so we were happy to be generous with her son.

Just gave my nephew 50 euro and that's plenty. He already got 50 euro off me for Christmas and he'll be getting another 50 euro from me for his birthday too. Has me robbed.

    No, just different strokes...

My little brother (also godson) got 50quid off me 3 years ago- he also gets cash off me for xmas/birthdays etc (usually 40quid).

Not long after I got together with the OH his brother had a confo and sister made her communion. Each got 30 quid off me and they were made up. Think it depends on the families tbh, but I reckon throwing 50s at 8 year olds is ridiculous.

    €50 is the absolute baseline.

With birthdays, christenings, Christmas, Easter, weddings, valentine's day, mother's day, and a shedload more days, it runs up to be an expensive business. There's something every month, it's no longer a one off expense, it's every month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,633 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

Why do you have to give a present for a communion when it's supposed to be about god and all that jazz.

The whole idea of giving money to a kid for going to mass is ridiculous.

No way. There's 100's, possibly 1000's, of kids on my street. I'd need a second mortgage to chuck each of them a score. I just don't open the door when they knock.

People in work have told me their children have 'made' ?850. Crazy days.

Do you live on South Circular Road or somewhere like that and include every household?

€50 for your First Communion? I was lucky to get a tenner, most relatives gave me some Rosary Beads and a Prayer Book. Now for your Confirmation, that's where the money was made.

It's my nephews communion next Saturday. I'm really struggling.. ..i don't know whether to give €30 or €50. I can't remember what I gave his older sister.

I think €30 is plenty, what's he going to buy apart from ps4 games?

Do parents pocket most of the kids communion money? Is this why we feel obligated to give upwards of €50 to a child?

I exaggerate slightly for effect! But there's bloody loads of kids on my road - no way they're getting 20 notes each.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,626 ✭✭✭Glenster

    Neighbours get nothing.

Kids of mates might get 20 bills.

    Family members get 50 bills.

    God kids get 100 bills.

    That's how it works.

I bought a religious statue and a religious book for every family communion I was ever invited to.

After a while, invitations stopped and that was fine with me :)

This seems sensible. He'll be delighted with the €20 to spend and even more delighted with the unexpected savings when he's older!
