Stung on Donedeal

Bought a used car very recently from a donedeal advert.
Just a word of warning for others, bring someone (mechanic) that really knows there stuff. I thought I did but it turns out the engine is knackered, it's burning oil at 5 litres a week (light enough driving). So it's gone to be reconditioned €1500. It's all I can do, unless I burn someone else but that's not happening.
    Be warned!!!

    Type of car?

Mazda 6 1.8 petrol. I was gutted to say the least.
    Apparently it's a common thing with the 1.8 Mazda's.

Was the seller the owner of the car on logbook?

I don't think burning 5 litres of oil a week is too common among them.

Also I don't understand why you mention donedeal.
What do they have to do with the fact you got stung buying second hand car?

Yep common enough when they're not serviced properly.
Could have been leaking a bit too.
    Sorry to hear.

Schoolboy error, perhaps report him to Revenue.

Sorry to hear OP but it is worth mentioning that this is no downside to DoneDeal in particular, this could have happened to you in any private sale.

Haha, a quote a friend of mine uses a lot "schoolboy error".
I've learned some valuable lessons in the last two weeks.
Hopefully the engineers that will do the work are as good as I have been told they are. If so (fingers crossed) I'll be cruising around in the Mazda for many a year.

True that! Maybe the heading is unfair on donedeal. I'll still use the site for other things.

Maybe better to ditch that car and get something like a corolla or avensis.

If you could source another engine it might not be a complete loss. All depends on where these guys are sourcing the cars from as to what luck you will have, some are deliberately buying up junkers with no nct and then selling on, others have contacts in the motor trade who give them cars to sell from time to time that may not be all bad.

It's actually gone away this afternoon to a company in meath that specialise in rebuilds so that's the path I've chosen. The price is reasonable and I've heard very good reviews....plus a 12 month warranty on the engine rebuild. I'll post the outcome when I've the car back in a week or two.

Done Deal has an appalling control environment though, let's be fair. Everyone who gets lamped seems to get lamped on Done Deal.

It's about scale... If only 1% of sales on DD are lemons, you'd hear about it - because that's 99% of private sales in Ireland.

In fairness it would be very difficult even for mechanic to spot the oil burning one. But if it's burning 1l/100km - it should look like a diesel locomotive...

May I ask how much did you pay for it and what's the year? Might be PM...

    Just over €3,000
Year 2008 & very good mileage.
It was too good to pass up or so I thought. I'm looking forward to having it back with the engine reconditioned, the Mazda 6 is a very comfortable car and great to drive.

I had exactly the same tale. 2 years ago got a 2006 Mazda 6 1.8 with a full year's NCT. Spotted a bit of black smoke but figured it passed NCT and I only wanted a runaround for a year before I got something better. Talked them down from 1200 to 900. Did me for a year, and then got 4k scrappage on it :)

Tough to get caught, but they're a nice bus, and you should have a few years trouble free motoring out of it with a rebuilt engine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭driver02

Did you contact the person/dealer you bought it from, I would be looking for half the 1500 here

I'm sure re build will be fine you just have to keep the car a year or two longer to get your value but that's no big deal as they are a hugely comfortable car and lovely to drive. Friend of mine still driving a 1993 one it's perfect

I think it's still worth a shot going back to the seller - especially if he's acting as a dealer. But I know it's actually going to be 99% a waste of time.

If he is an unregistered dealer, he might want to stay under the radar and just pay up. But I would not count on it really...

However, if it can be proven he is dealing for profit, the courts will be on buyers side - lack of registration does not reduce liability.

I agree with CiniO on this one. I feel for you because you got burned but DoneDeal is only a platform for connecting people who want to buy and sell items. They do outline guides for buying and selling safely so I don't think that there is much more that they can do in this respect.

Unfortunately that some lousy people out there who are willing to screw good, honest people out of their hard earned money but I do know that they take issues like this seriously.

I think that you contact them and explain the situation they may be able to help you out. The can at least look into the sellers history to see if they've been flagged before for dodgy dealings.

They also work closely with law enforcement on issues like this so it wouldn't hurt to give them a shout.

Best of luck with it. I hope you get some justice! :)

Sound! Yeah I kind of jumped the gun with the heading for the thread. I know it's actually nothing to do with donedeal. I actually use the site myself (obviously).
Just still so annoyed that someone could burn someone else like that. I don't understand it at all.
I could easily sell the car on, it runs and sounds perfect and is a real looker. I just won't do it.

It's just that I know some of them personally and I know that when people like you get stung, it really p1sses them off.

Give them a shout, they may be able to help :) What's the worst that can happen at this stage?

Don't waste your time trying to go after the seller. They obviously new the car was a drinker so as soon as the OP handed over the money and drove off, the seller ditched the mobile phone sim card.

    Bought a 2006 c4 2 years ago. Bought cheap .

Car looked like new. Head gasket had gone plus needed 400 spent on top .

I put 1000 into that car and everyone said I was nuts .bought cheap so I went along with it.

2 years later I've been to wales twice in it. Use it everyday for work and she's flying .

Everyone still tells me I have a girls car tho ;)

I'd be in junk car territory with the money I have left to spend on the Mazda

You just spent over €3000 on the Mazda that you can't drive when €1000 could easily have bought you a decent motor that would go for another 200k miles.

The condition and history of any car is far more important then the year on the reg or the price tag.

    Anyway, valuable lesson learned..

Good luck with the repairs.. Hope it all works out..

@OP, was hoping to buy a 08 Mazda 6 1.8 petrol in the coming days. Viewed the car yesterday and it's really nice, has comprehensive service history etc. I do plan on doing a motor check and have my mechanic look over it before buying, just wondering was there any other telltale sign of burning oil that your mechanic could have checked? Thanks in advance

Absolutely gorgeous car to drive, everything was very smooth. I can't wait to have it back.
The only thing I recommend to do is stand out the car and get the mechanic or yourself to plant your foot on the accelerator for a few seconds. Watch for a big puff of smoke! I'm sure the mechanic will do that anyway. I didn't, I was too polite & now I'm paying for that. Look for regular oil changes and I mean regular, with the correct oil too.
The seller topped up the oil before he met me so the oil was perfectly clean and levels were full so that's not an indication of a well kept car in this case.
I did a motorcheck, the car was 100% so I was delighted.
I hope it works out for you, they're a stunning car and way ahead of its time design wise.

Check for blue or white smoke out of the exhaust when the revs are on, you would also notice an off smell from the exhaust emissions from normal petrol exhaust emissions. On test drive when car has got to operating temperature drive it hard and look in rear view mirror for signs of smoke from exhaust, should be none from a petrol car once it has reached operating temperature. Have a look at the ground under the car prior to test drive, on return when you park up leave car running a few mins and then check under car for oil spillage. Have a look for signs around the engine oil fill cap of regular fillups, may be spillage around it if it's a weekly task.

In general I follow these rules if I'm buying private...
Put the reg in to motortax.ie vehicle transaction enquiry check to see if the ownership has changed in the last 3 months, a bad sign if it has changed so recently.
I would avoid buying the car unless you can verify seller is the owner on the logbook.

Agree with all of the above. Although my Mazda engine is bone dry on the outside, not a drop leaking.

No doubt, but worth a try. But tell Revenue regardless; the cowboy probably buys the cars cheaply because of the problems with the intention of selling them off with a decent profit without mentioning the problems whilst passing it off as his own/sisters/etc.

Completely untrue and an over reaction. There are thousands upon thousands of genuine cars and seller on DD. You may have been stung because of ignorance but don't tar every one and every car on donedeal because of something that happened to you. I have sold all my cars on donedeal, I am not a bogus seller and all my cars were in perfect mechanical order.

It can't be BURNING 5 LITRES of oil a week, are you sure the sump bolt isn't loose??

How many litres does the engine take?
